You are not bad at dating

5/12 Edited to

... Read moreDating can sometimes feel like a confusing and frustrating experience, especially when your body seems to push you toward people who may not be the best fit for you emotionally. From personal experience, I've learned that the nervous system plays a significant role in these patterns, often leading us to misinterpret anxiety for attraction. For example, feeling excitement from the unpredictability of someone who is emotionally unavailable creates a dopamine rush that can mimic true connection, but it's actually rooted in uncertainty and stress. One of the most eye-opening realizations I had was recognizing how stable, healthy people can feel boring or unexciting—not because there’s no potential for love, but because my body was so used to the adrenaline of chasing someone who pulled away. When someone offers genuine, steady affection, my initial reaction was the 'ick'—a sudden feeling of discomfort or disinterest. This defensive response stems from a protective mechanism within my nervous system, designed to prevent vulnerability when control isn’t possible. To manage these confusing emotional responses, I found grounding techniques crucial. Using apps dedicated to somatic reset helped me differentiate between anxiety-driven passion and authentic attraction by calming my nervous system and allowing clearer emotional insight. Journaling and naming the anxious part of myself also enabled me to confront and understand the subconscious patterns driving my choices. It’s important to remember that performing or chasing approval from someone who sends mixed signals isn’t a sign of weakness, but rather an anxious pattern that can be addressed with self-awareness and self-compassion. Seeking relationships where you are genuinely liked for who you are—not where you have to constantly prove yourself—is a healthier, more sustainable path. In essence, you are not bad at dating; your nervous system has been guiding you based on survival instincts that might no longer serve your emotional well-being. Recognizing this is the first step toward healing and building healthier, more fulfilling relationships.
