bedtime used to scare me 👇

i used to be fine until the room got quiet. then my brain would start pulling up every text, every bill, every weird look, every thing i needed to fix tomorrow.

i tried box breathing, sleep podcasts, and writing neat little lists. they helped when i was already calm. they did nothing when my chest was tight and my body felt on alert.

i was googling "how to stop spiraling over small things" and "how to manage anxiety in relationships" because night made every tiny thing feel huge.

what changed it for me was realizing sleep was not the problem. threat mode was. my body was trying to protect me from thoughts like they were real danger.

if i was overthinking, silence made it worse. if i was panicking, counting made me feel trapped. if i was ashamed, journaling kept me in the story. i needed to process the emotion and reset the body, not argue with my brain.

i found groundly after my psychiatrist kept saying my nervous system needed a bedtime cue before the spike. the part that surprised me was how much lighter i felt after the emotion had somewhere to go.

i still have anxious nights, but they do not feel like a full emergency anymore. start building a grounding ritual before bedtime becomes the place your brain holds court.

... Read moreDealing with bedtime anxiety was once a daunting challenge for me. I realized that the silence of the night made my worries amplify, with every small issue feeling like a looming catastrophe. Traditional advice like box breathing and journaling felt ineffective when anxiety hit its peak. What truly changed my experience was understanding that it wasn’t just about trying to fall asleep—it was about calming the nervous system and resetting my body's threat response. One practical approach I found invaluable was using apps like Groundly, which allow you to vent and then guide you through somatic reset exercises. This way, I could acknowledge the overwhelming thoughts without getting trapped in them, giving my brain a safe space to express worries instead of suppressing them. It’s important to address the emotions rather than argue with your anxious mind. Another tip from my psychiatrist that helped a lot was to stop trying so hard to sleep. Ironically, the pressure to succeed at sleep was making it worse. Instead, I learned to accept restless moments as part of the process, telling myself that “resting badly” is okay and that eliminating pressure reduces anxiety around sleep. I also experimented with different types of background noise. Complete silence made my mind race, and white noise felt harsh. Pink noise—soft and rain-like—provided just enough auditory input to keep my thoughts from spiraling. Placing my phone across the room encouraged me to disconnect without losing the comforting background sound. Learning the 4-7-8 breathing technique was helpful when done loosely. The key is focusing on the long exhale to trigger the parasympathetic nervous system and lower stress. Messing up the counts did not matter; it was the deep calming breath that mattered most. If you struggle with nighttime anxiety or insomnia, try building a personal grounding ritual before bed. This might include venting unwanted thoughts honestly, using calming sounds, gentle breathing, and giving yourself permission to have imperfect sleep. Over time, these practices rewired my brain’s reaction to nighttime, transforming bedtime from a source of dread into an opportunity for rest and self-care.
