Opossum shirt

So many of you asked about the process behind my recent opossum shirt, especially the design! I absolutely love drawing animals, and possums hold a special place in my heart. They're often misunderstood, but their unique features make them incredibly fun to sketch and draw. For this particular project, my goal was to create a cute, slightly stylized possum drawing that would not only look charming but also translate well into a block print. It's a wonderful challenge to simplify a complex creature into distinct lines for carving! When I start any animal drawing, especially when I know it's destined for printmaking, I always begin with very simple geometric shapes. Think circles for the head and body, and ovals for the ears. Possums have such distinct faces – that pointy snout and those expressive, often beady eyes are key identifiers. I usually spend a good amount of time just sketching different facial expressions. Do I want it to look curious, playful, or maybe even a little mischievous? For my shirt, I aimed for a sweet, curious look that I think really shines through in the final print. Capturing that gentle demeanor in a possum drawing was really important to me. One of the biggest tips I can give for anyone trying their hand at drawing possums (or any animal, for that matter!) is to always look at reference photos. Don't try to draw from memory alone, especially when you're learning. Pay close attention to their unique fur texture, the way their prehensile tails curl, and the small, often overlooked details like their tiny, almost human-like claws. Even if your final piece is going to be simplified for a block print or a cartoon style, understanding these real-life nuances makes your drawing feel more authentic and alive. Don't be afraid to exaggerate certain features a little to bring out their personality – for instance, I love making their ears big and round, and giving them a slightly upturned nose. After I'm happy with my initial pencil drawing, which can take several iterations, I carefully refine the lines. This step is crucial, especially when you're preparing a possum drawing for something like a block print, because every line you draw will eventually be a line you carve. I often use a fine-tip pen to go over my pencil lines, ensuring they are clear and crisp. If you're just starting with possum drawing, try focusing on their unique tail first – it's a great way to practice curves and dynamic movement. Then move onto their body shape, which is often a bit stout and low to the ground, before tackling the head. You might be surprised at how quickly you can capture their essence with practice!
