It's so tough sometimes to come up with unique, compelling backstories and rich lore for our original characters (OCs). But don't worry, you're not alone! I've gathered some of my go-to prompts and tips that have really helped me flesh out my OCs and bring them to life. Let's dive in and get those creative juices flowing! Why is OC Lore So Important? Before we jump into ideas, remember that strong lore isn't just a detail – it's the backbone of your character. It defines their motivations, flaws, relationships, and even their appearance. Good lore makes your OC feel real and relatable, giving them depth beyond just a cool design or a set of powers. Where to Start: Core Lore Elements to Consider When I'm stuck, I like to think about these key areas. Just pick one and see where it leads! The Origin Story: How did your OC come into existence? Were they born into a powerful lineage, or did they rise from humble beginnings? Did a magical accident give them powers, or were they trained rigorously? Maybe their past involves something as simple yet profound as growing up with a loyal brown dog that witnessed their early struggles, or perhaps their secret origins are shrouded in dim lighting, only revealed in whispers. Defining Moments & Trauma: What's the one big event that shaped them most? It could be a devastating loss, a betrayal, a miraculous escape, or a discovery that changed their worldview forever. This event often fuels their core desires or fears. Relationships & Their Impact: Who were the most important people (or creatures!) in their life? A strict mentor, a supportive best friend, a rival from childhood, or family members with complex dynamics. These connections often define an OC's emotional landscape. Secrets & Hidden Pasts: What are they hiding? Maybe a forgotten identity, a forbidden skill, a dark deed, or a lineage they're ashamed of. Secrets add intrigue and internal conflict. Motivations & Flaws: What truly drives your OC? Is it revenge, love, a quest for knowledge, or simply survival? And what are their weaknesses? Pride, fear, impulsiveness, or self-doubt? Flaws make them human and relatable. World Integration: How does their lore connect to the world they live in? Are they part of a prophecy, a forgotten ancient race, or do they hold a unique position in society? Their background should feel organically woven into the fabric of your fictional universe. My Favorite Prompts to Spark OC Story Ideas: The Unlikely Gift: Your OC receives a mysterious item or ability they never asked for. How does it change their life, and what responsibilities (or dangers) come with it? The Broken Promise: Your OC made a promise they couldn't keep. What were the consequences, and how does it haunt them? The Hidden Truth: Your OC grew up believing one thing about their past or family, only to discover a shocking truth later on. How do they react? The Outcast's Journey: Your OC is an outcast from their community. Why were they cast out, and what journey do they embark on to find (or create) a place where they belong? The Reluctant Hero/Villain: Your OC never wanted to be a hero/villain, but circumstances forced their hand. What was that turning point, and how do they grapple with their new role? A Little Trick I Use: Sometimes, I just look at a random object or concept and think, "How would this fit into my OC's backstory?" For instance, seeing a particular type of antique jewelry might make me wonder if my OC inherited it, and what stories are tied to it. Or the idea of a specific weather pattern, like a perpetual drizzle, could inspire a character who thrives in solitude and dim lighting, much like my own OC story ideas often come to me in quiet, reflective moments. Developing OC lore is a journey, not a destination. Don't feel pressured to have everything figured out at once. Start with a few key ideas, let them grow, and don't be afraid to experiment.
