It took us 2 years to finally bring this little dream to life! What used to be our primary bedroom is now a Tiny Oasis on Airbnb. 🪴✨
At just 250 sq ft, I honestly wasn’t sure it could work. I kept asking myself, “Can a bedroom really turn into a whole apartment?” But once we added that wall and carved out a separate sleeping nook, the space completely transformed. Now it has its own entrance, kitchen, living room, bathroom, bedroom, and even a private backyard.
And that backyard? It’s probably my favorite part, plunge pool, outdoor shower, entertainment setup… it still surprises me how much we fit into such a small space.
So far, every single guest has given us 5 stars (🤯) and somehow we landed in the Top 1% of homes on Airbnb and made SuperHost status🎖️!

... Read moreWow, seeing how we transformed our 250 sq ft bedroom into a full-fledged Tiny Oasis Airbnb really makes me think about how much potential even the smallest spaces hold! When we were planning it, the biggest hurdle was fitting everything in – a bedroom area, a compact kitchen, a living room with a sofa, and even a small dining nook – all in what used to be just one room. It got me thinking about all the renters out there struggling with similar space constraints, but without the option to add permanent walls like we did. That's where reconfigurable bedroom furniture truly becomes a lifesaver!
I remember when I first moved into my tiny studio apartment, and my bedroom was my living room, dining room, and office all rolled into one. It felt impossible to create distinct zones, but clever furniture made all the difference. For renters, the key is flexibility and maximizing every inch without making permanent changes.
Let's talk beds first. A traditional bed can eat up so much space. Have you ever considered a Murphy bed? They fold right up into the wall, totally freeing up your bedroom area during the day. Or, if that's too big of an investment for a rental, a good quality sofa bed or futon can serve as both your sleeping space at night and your couch during the day. Another great option is a storage bed with drawers underneath – perfect for stashing away linens, seasonal clothes, or anything that would otherwise clutter your floor.
Then there's the workspace dilemma. Many of us need a home office, but where do you put it in a small bedroom? I'm a huge fan of fold-down desks that attach to the wall. When you're done working, just fold it up, and your space is instantly transformed. If you need something sturdier, look for slim, console-style tables that can double as a desk and then maybe a small entryway table or even a buffet when entertaining. This is similar to how we managed to squeeze in a small dining nook in our Tiny Oasis – thinking multi-purpose!
And speaking of dining, who says you can't have a proper meal in your bedroom? Extendable tables or drop-leaf tables are fantastic. They can be tucked away against a wall, pulled out for a quick meal, and even extended further if you have a guest. Pair them with stackable chairs or folding chairs that can be stored away easily. I even used a sturdy storage ottoman as extra seating that doubled as a footrest and a place to hide blankets.
Storage is another huge one for renters. Since you can't always install built-in shelves, modular shelving units are your best friend. They can be customized to fit different wall spaces and can be moved easily when you relocate. Think vertically! Wall-mounted shelves, floating shelves (if your landlord allows small holes), and tall, narrow bookcases can hold so much without taking up precious floor space. Over-the-door organizers are brilliant for shoes, toiletries, or even pantry items if your "compact kitchen" area is just a mini-fridge and microwave combo.
Finally, for the living zone, especially if your bedroom doubles as your main hangout spot. Modular sofas are incredible because you can arrange them to fit your space, or even separate modules to create individual seating. Poufs and floor cushions are also great for flexible seating that can be stacked up when not in use.
The biggest takeaway from our Airbnb project, and from my own rental experiences, is to think creatively about how each piece of furniture can do double or even triple duty. Our goal was to make a small space feel expansive and functional, and whether it's through adding a wall or choosing the right reconfigurable furniture, the principles are the same: define your zones, embrace multi-functionality, and make every square foot count. While a plunge pool in a rental bedroom might be a bit ambitious, the idea of creating a luxurious and functional escape, even in a small footprint, is totally achievable with smart choices!
