Unpopular opinion but college dating is not real

When you step into college, you’re dropped into a bubble. This bubble becomes your entire world shaping your reality, relationships, friendships, even your happiness. You’re stuck in it, surrounded by the same people and spaces, until life (or graduation) pops it. It’s simple that spending more time with someone makes you like them more, even romantically. In that college bubble, you’re constantly around the same peers, so attraction often feels inevitable. But that’s the thing, it’s artificial. Half the time, you’re not choosing from the “real world”, just the limited pool in your bubble. Sure, there are exceptions, but most college relationships thrive on proximity, not genuine compatibility. Thoughts?

... Read moreI totally get that feeling of being swept up in the college dating scene, almost like your academic system is making you date! It’s like the original post says, you’re suddenly dropped into this intense 'bubble' where everyone seems to be pairing off. I remember thinking, 'Is this genuine, or am I just dating someone because they're in my philosophy class and we keep bumping into each other at the library?' It's a really valid question to ask yourself. Think about it: shared dorms, late-night study sessions, campus events, and even just walking across campus – you're constantly surrounded by the same faces. It's only natural for connections to form. But from my own experience, it's crucial to distinguish between a connection born purely out of convenience and one that's truly based on compatibility and deeper feelings. Sometimes, the 'academic system' inadvertently creates this pressure cooker for romance. There's almost an unspoken expectation to have a 'college sweetheart,' isn't there? I've seen friends go into relationships purely because it felt like 'what you do in college,' rather than a deep, mutual attraction. The image of two people ice skating, holding hands really brings this to mind. Shared activities and fun moments are definitely the building blocks of any relationship. You might meet someone at a campus event, during a club activity, or just hanging out, and suddenly, you're spending all your time together. These experiences are wonderful, but the question posed in the image, 'Did you marry your college sweetheart? Are you still together?', makes you wonder about the longevity and true foundation of these 'bubble' relationships. It's a reminder that what feels intense and real within the confines of campus life might face different challenges once that bubble pops. If you're feeling like your academic system is making you date, or if you're in a college relationship and wondering if it's truly 'real,' here are a few things I've learned: Look beyond proximity: Take a step back and honestly assess your feelings. Would you still be as interested in this person if you met them off-campus, without the constant convenience of seeing them everywhere? Expand your horizons: Even within college, try to diversify your social circle. Join different clubs, volunteer, or engage with people outside your immediate academic department or friend group. This can help you see if your preferences change when your options aren't so limited. Focus on personal growth: College is a unique time for self-discovery. Don’t let the pressure to be in a relationship overshadow your personal goals and development. A healthy relationship should complement, not consume, your individual journey. Communicate openly: If you're in a relationship, talk to your partner about your feelings and concerns. Are you both on the same page about the future, or are you just enjoying the present convenience? It's okay to be single: There's absolutely no rule that says you have to find your soulmate or even have a serious relationship in college. Some of the most fulfilling experiences come from focusing on friendships, academics, and personal passions. Ultimately, college dating can be incredibly fun and sometimes, yes, you do find your person! But it's also a unique environment that can create artificial connections. It's about being honest with yourself about what you truly seek and not letting the 'bubble' dictate your romantic life.
