MUST hike in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

One of my absolute favorite hikes we’ve ever done: the Old Man of Storr on the island of Skye in Scotland!

This is a moderate hike, mainly because it’s straight uphill! I did it at 13 weeks pregnant & didn’t have any issues.

The scenery is unreal & you don’t realize how big the rock formations are until you’re standing right next to them!

We rented a car while in Edinburgh & drove here. Parking was a few euros & takes a card!

Old Man of Storr
2023/4/14 Edited to

... Read moreSince sharing my incredible experience hiking the Old Man of Storr, I've had so many questions about exploring the Isle of Skye! It truly is one of Scotland's most magical destinations, and I wanted to dive a bit deeper into what made our trip so special and offer some tips for anyone planning their own Scottish adventure. The Old Man of Storr, with its prominent rock formations reaching towards the sky, was undoubtedly a highlight. When I mentioned it was a moderate hike, I really meant the initial push! The path up is quite steep at first, but it's well-maintained, and the ascent is totally worth it. Each step brings you closer to those distinctive rock formations, and the views just keep getting better. Don't rush it; take your time to soak in the rugged landscape – you'll pass through green and brown hills that shift in color with the light. We went on a day where the sky was a mix of blue sky with scattered clouds, which meant dramatic lighting for photos. Even with an overcast sky later, the atmosphere felt incredibly wild and beautiful. Remember to wear sturdy hiking boots; the terrain can be uneven, especially after rain. Pack layers too; the weather on Skye can change in an instant! Beyond the Old Man of Storr, the Isle of Skye is brimming with other breathtaking walks. If you're looking for something different, the Fairy Pools near Glen Brittle are a must-see. The series of crystal-clear pools and waterfalls cascade down the mountain, creating an ethereal landscape. It's a gentler walk than Storr, perfect for a leisurely afternoon, and if you're brave, you can even take a dip in the icy waters! Another incredible option is the Quiraing, a landslip on the eastern face of Meall na Suiramach, the northernmost summit of the Trotternish ridge. The scenery here is truly epic, with towering rock pinnacles and panoramic vistas, often featuring a wide scenic view of the coast and distant water. It’s a bit more challenging than the Fairy Pools but offers unparalleled photographic opportunities. For a shorter, whimsical experience, check out the Fairy Glen near Uig – it's like stepping into a miniature enchanted world with conical hills and tiny lochs. Planning your visit to Skye? I can't stress enough how important it is to rent a car, just like we did from Edinburgh. It gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace and find those hidden gems. The roads can be narrow 'single track' roads with passing places, so be prepared for some careful driving, especially if you're not used to driving on the left! We stayed in Portree, which is a fantastic base with charming pubs and restaurants. Make sure to book accommodation well in advance, especially during peak season, as places fill up quickly. Give yourself at least 3-4 full days to truly experience the island without feeling rushed. The changing light, the mist rolling over the mountains, and the occasional rainbows make every view unique. It's an experience that truly leaves a lasting impression, a wild beauty that stays with you long after you've left its shores.

The most memorable trip from my honeymoon was hiking to see highland cows. It was something I wanted to do so bad in Scotland. The first hike we did, we read would have so many cows.. but that was a bust unfortunately. The day we went it was very foggy and it just got worse the higher we went and a
