Uncertainty

We spend so much of our lives trying to make the river hold still.

We want to know what’s coming. We want guarantees. We want to know that the choice we make will be the right one, that the people we love will stay, that the ground beneath us won’t suddenly shift.

So we reach for certainty like a rock in the middle of a raging river and hold on with everything we have.

But life keeps moving anyway.

People change. Plans unravel. Doors close and unexpected ones open. What once felt permanent disappears. What we feared might destroy us sometimes becomes the very thing that leads us somewhere new.

And maybe the exhaustion isn’t coming from the river.

Maybe it’s coming from how hard we’re trying not to be carried by it.

There is a profound kind of freedom in realizing that we were never promised certainty—and we don’t actually need it in order to be okay.

We don’t have to know where everything is going.

We don’t have to solve tomorrow before we can live today.

We don’t have to demand that life reveal the whole path before we’re willing to take the next step.

Surrender isn’t giving up. It isn’t becoming passive or pretending that difficult things don’t hurt.

It’s loosening our grip on the belief that life must unfold according to our expectations before we can be at peace.

The river may still turn.

The current may still surprise us.

There may still be stretches where we cannot see what waits around the bend.

But when we stop requiring certainty, something inside us softens. We stop fighting every current. We become available to the life that is actually happening instead of exhausting ourselves trying to force it into the life we imagined.

And eventually, we discover something beautiful:

The same river we were afraid would carry us away

has been carrying us all along.

Maybe trust isn’t believing that we know where the river is going.

Maybe trust is knowing we can meet life wherever it takes us.

Life is in constant motion, overflowing with uncertainty. And when we finally realize we don’t need certainty, then we can flow with it too.

... Read moreLiving with uncertainty is a challenge we all face, yet it’s often misunderstood. I used to struggle immensely with the fear of the unknown, constantly seeking guarantees and holding tight to plans. Life, however, showed me through unexpected twists that certainty is an illusion. I remember a time when a major career change completely upended my expectations. Initially, resistance and anxiety took over—I fought the current vigorously, trying to grasp tightly onto the riverbank of plans and security. But gradually, I learned to loosen my grip, to accept that some things are simply beyond my control. This shift in mindset brought a profound sense of peace. Trusting that the river’s flow—though unpredictable—was carrying me forward opened doors to new opportunities and personal growth I never expected. The exhaustion from struggling against change lifted, replaced by a soft acceptance that life’s current could be a guiding force, not a threat. Embracing uncertainty has also deepened my awareness and presence. Without the need to know every detail of what lies ahead, I find myself more engaged with the present moment. This awareness enhances my relationships, creativity, and resilience. The journey is ongoing, but the key lesson remains: certainty was never promised, yet we have what we need to navigate life’s river. This understanding invites us to meet life wherever it takes us, transforming fear into freedom and struggle into flow.
