We got a greenhouse to extend our harvest

Extending my harvest season was never not an option after I saw my plants thriving. I scored this walk-in greenhouse on sale at Tractor Supply 🙌 (we love a deal). It’s roomy enough for my watermelon to keep thriving a little longer, plus I’ll be tucking in some hardy herbs, and eventually moving my baby aloe & succulents in once they finish acclimating from their Walmart indoor life. They’ve got about 5 more days before they graduate to the big leagues outside 🌱

This greenhouse feels like a little insurance policy against the zone 6 weather cutting things short. It’s dual-sided, easy to walk in, and gives my plants a cozy home while I get to keep enjoying fresh growth into the cooler months. Plus honestly, I think it looks really cute. It’s a temporary one but one day I hope to have a permanent fixture. Do you have a greenhouse?

... Read moreHaving a walk-in greenhouse can be a game changer for gardeners looking to extend their growing season, especially in zone 6 where cooler weather arrives early and can abruptly end harvests. These greenhouses serve as a protective shield against frost and chilling winds, creating a microclimate that keeps your plants cozy and thriving longer than usual. The advantage of choosing a roomy, dual-sided design—as highlighted by this greenhouse purchased on sale at Tractor Supply—is the ease of access for tending your plants as well as ample space for a variety of crops. For example, keeping watermelon plants inside extends their fruiting period by maintaining warmer conditions. Additionally, hardy herbs such as thyme, basil, chamomile, and mint thrive well under greenhouse protection, benefitting from the regulated humidity and temperature. Transitioning delicate houseplants like aloe and succulents from an indoor environment (such as from Walmart stores) to a greenhouse setting offers a gentle acclimating zone before they graduate outdoors. This gradual transition prevents shock from sudden temperature drops or exposure, which often happens during direct planting outside, significantly improving plant survival rates. Besides functional benefits, greenhouses can be an aesthetic addition to your garden space. Many gardeners find that a neat, well-maintained greenhouse adds charm while serving as a “plant insurance policy” against unpredictable weather. Even a temporary setup provides immense value and could be a stepping stone to investing in a permanent fixture down the line. Moreover, extending your harvest season is not just about quantity but quality—being able to enjoy fresh produce and aromatic herbs into late autumn or early winter is a rewarding experience. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned gardener, having a greenhouse provides flexibility and security, supporting continuous growth despite seasonal limitations. If you’re contemplating getting a greenhouse, consider your local hardiness zone and the types of plants you want to cultivate. Starting small with herbs or flowers can be a great way to learn before moving on to more demanding crops. Also, look out for sales at local suppliers like Tractor Supply to find budget-friendly options that fit your gardening goals. Ultimately, a greenhouse creates opportunities for experimenting with plant varieties, extending your gardening passion, and savoring the beauty of fresh garden harvests well beyond the traditional outdoor season.

Oh wow how big is that one? It’s been getting down into the 50’s at night here in Connecticut. I think I’m going to have to get one soon too.
