While our September plan focuses heavily on diving into scripture, I wanted to share some thoughts on how we can deepen our 'daily prayer' life, especially when we're seeking to lean closer to God through His Word. For me, daily scripture reading isn't just about ticking off a box; it's a foundational part of my conversation with God. You know, sometimes we stumble upon a verse that just hits different. Matthew 2:2-3, for example, talks about the wise men asking, 'Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we saw His star in the East and have come to worship Him.' And then, 'When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.' This passage, though often associated with Christmas, reminds us that seeking Jesus leads to profound worship, but also sometimes stirs discomfort in the world. For me, it's a powerful reminder to stay focused on worshipping Christ, no matter what external pressures arise. When I read verses like this, I often pause and reflect: 'How does this apply to my life right now? What is God trying to show me about my own seeking and worship?' It transforms reading into a moment of prayerful dialogue. Making daily prayer and scripture reflection a consistent habit can be challenging, but it's incredibly rewarding. I've found that consistency is key, even if it's just 5-10 minutes. Here are a few things that have helped me: Find Your Sacred Space & Time: Whether it's first thing in the morning with your coffee or during a quiet moment in the evening, designate a specific time and place. This helps train your mind and spirit to enter that reflective mode. Engage Actively with the Text: Don't just read; meditate. Ask questions. What stood out to you? What feelings did it evoke? How can you apply the wisdom from books like Proverbs or the comfort from Psalms to your daily life? I sometimes journal my thoughts right after reading, which helps solidify the message. Pray the Scriptures: Instead of just reading, turn the verses into your personal prayers. For instance, if you're reading a passage from Corinthians about love, you can pray, 'God, help me embody this kind of love in my interactions today.' Or if you're in James, asking for wisdom, pray specifically for wisdom in a situation you're facing. Embrace Different Prayer Styles: Sometimes I pray silently, sometimes out loud. Other times, I simply sit in quiet contemplation after reading, allowing God to speak to my heart. Don't feel like there's only one 'right' way to pray. Connecting with God through His scripture references and daily spiritual reflection helps anchor my heart. It’s not about perfect adherence, but about showing up consistently and allowing His Word to work within me. As we continue this September journey, remember that each verse, whether from Ecclesiastes, Proverbs, or any other book, is an invitation into a deeper relationship with Him.
