BIZZARE Sadness Hacks My Therapist Taught Me

2025/12/29 Edited to

... Read moreDealing with sadness and emotional overwhelm can often feel never-ending, but these unique hacks I learned through therapy have truly helped me regain a sense of control and calm. One technique that surprised me was drinking warm saltwater in the morning. It’s not about cleansing in a dramatic way but more about signaling to the nervous system that it can relax and stop spiraling. I noticed this small ritual set a positive tone for the day. Another practice that I found oddly powerful was setting a timer to cry intentionally. Instead of letting sadness hover as a constant background feeling, I schedule a dedicated time to let the tears flow. Knowing there is an end time makes the emotion less overwhelming. Similarly, playing the happiest song I know on repeat tricks my brain into shifting focus and eventually even singing along replaces the spiral. I also learned the value of speaking my feelings out loud to myself in the mirror. It sounds strange but saying "I feel sad because..." helps process emotions more clearly and prevents self-gaslighting. In moments when sadness felt more like buried stress from tasks and responsibilities, breaking down my to-do list and putting deadlines on a calendar transformed anxiety into manageable steps. Cold exposure, such as taking a 30-second freezing shower, provides an instant shock to the system that disrupts negative emotions temporarily. It’s like hitting a reset button. And finally, lying on the floor with legs elevated against a wall—even though it seems awkward—calms the nervous system and physically releases tension. These simple but effective methods have helped me better handle sadness without medication, emphasizing self-awareness and small intentional actions. If you struggle with emotional heaviness, trying these practical hacks might offer relief and remind you that even unconventional approaches can bring healing.

Setting a timer to cry is so real. I used to do that in college and it helped sm to be able to get it out and get back on task

These actually see pretty helpful. I’m already doing some of them purely by accident 😂. I have a set time to cry but no timer so I need to do that. I always end my shower with a cold water rinse. I add a pinch of salt to my morning water. If I had to pick a song that uplifts me but is totally embarrassing it’s “little boo thang” 😂 ☠️. It makes me irrationally happy. Great tips. I’m gonna for sure start implementing the ones I haven’t. Great post.
