Book Bling Buddies!

When I do craft fairs and cons, I like to have a variety of things on my table. This includes bookmarks I make that I’ve named book bling because they usually have shiny charms/beads/rhinestones.

A while ago, I decided to try my hand at making polymer clay beads. The vampire and bats were my first and then I got an idea to make critters so that their heads stick out the top, and their legs the bottom! I’m pretty happy how they came out. The cats are kind of creepy, but my daughter loves them, so I may gift one to her. However, my puppy… my dear sweet darling doggo… decided that maybe she should chomp them. A tea cup & pot bore the brunt of the teeth, and the mouse lost an ear. Luckily, I was able to rebuild the ear!

I also decided to cover them with UV resin for extra durability. I don’t like the brand I used (don’t remembered what it was) because it kept beading up before I could get it under the lamp. I’m going to upgrade next time.

... Read moreI've been absolutely loving diving into the world of polymer clay, especially for creating my 'Book Bling Buddies'! While I've experimented with various critters like little cats and even a quirky corgi (you should see his little behind!), my absolute favorite has to be the charming 'Book Worm' bookmarks. They’re such a delight to make and really add a whimsical touch to any book. When I started, I found that polymer clay is fantastic for bookmarks because it’s so versatile and durable once baked. You can really let your imagination run wild! For a simple 'Book Worm,' I usually start with basic sculpting tools and a few vibrant colors of polymer clay. Think about shaping a small, rounded head for your worm. You can give it little eyes using tiny dots of contrasting clay or even a dab of acrylic paint after baking. Then, for the body, I roll out a longer piece and gently curve it into segments, making sure it’s thin enough to fit comfortably between book pages but sturdy enough not to break. A key step I've learned is baking. Following the clay's package instructions precisely is crucial for durability. Over-baking can make it brittle, and under-baking can leave it too soft. Once my little worm is baked and cooled, that's when the real 'bling' magic happens! I often add a little cap or hat to my 'Book Worm,' much like the one in my collection, to give it extra personality. You can even attach a small charm or tassel to the bottom segment – that’s where the 'book bling' comes in! One challenge I encountered early on, and something I know many crafters face, is applying UV resin. I totally get the frustration of resin beading up! What I’ve found helps tremendously is ensuring your surface is perfectly clean and lint-free. Also, using a good quality UV resin makes a huge difference. I like brands that have a slightly thicker viscosity; they tend to self-level better and don’t bead up as much. Applying thin layers and curing each layer under a UV lamp for the recommended time is the secret to a smooth, durable finish. This step not only protects your polymer clay creation but also gives it a lovely, glossy shine that really makes the colors pop. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different shades and textures for your worm. Imagine a striped worm, or one with tiny polka dots! You can also think about other creature ideas if you get hooked on making these. I’ve made dragons and bats, and they’re all equally fun. The process of creating these 'Book Bling Buddies' is incredibly rewarding, and seeing them peeking out of a book always brings a smile to my face. It's a fantastic way to personalize your reading experience or create unique gifts for fellow book lovers. Give it a try – you might just find your new favorite craft! Remember, practice makes perfect, and every little worm you create will be uniquely yours.
