With the weather getting better and better, I’ve been on a mission to find cool new hikes near New York - and Bearfort Mountain is high on my list. 🙌🏼
It’s about 1.5 hours from the city, and you can choose from different trail levels based on your mood/energy. We went for the 4.1 mile out & back, and it was chef’s kiss—not too hard, not too easy, with amazing views of Surprise Lake at our mid-point.
Things to Know:
- There’s a free parking lot right by the entrance (with restrooms!)
- Don’t forget to pack water + bug spray - you’ll need, believe me.
- Our trail started with a blue marker, then switched to yellow (Ernest Walker Trail) so keep an eye on signs!
Once we wrapped the hike, we headed to Luc's (just an 8-minute drive) for the a delicious lakeside lunch. Get the Turkey Avocado fajitas (they're 10/10!).
... Read moreHey fellow adventurers! Since you're looking for the best summer hiking trails and mountain views close to NYC, I absolutely have to share more about my recent Bearfort Mountain experience. It truly hit all the marks for a perfect day trip escape from the city hustle.
What really sets Bearfort Mountain apart, especially for us New Yorkers, is its incredible accessibility. Being just about 1.5 hours from the city means you can comfortably leave in the morning, enjoy a fantastic hike, and be back in time for dinner, making it an ideal "hiking day trip from NYC." Many "mountains nearby" can feel like a huge commitment, but Bearfort strikes that sweet spot of being remote enough for stunning nature, yet close enough not to eat up your whole weekend. It's definitely one of the "closest mountains to New York City" that offers such a rewarding experience.
The "top hikes with mountain views" query often makes me think of epic, strenuous treks, but Bearfort Mountain offers a beautiful balance. Our 4.1-mile out-and-back trail was perfect – enough to feel accomplished, but not so grueling that you're exhausted for days. The highlight, hands down, was reaching that rocky outcrop overlooking Surprise Lake. The panoramic view of the lake nestled among lush green mountains was absolutely breathtaking – exactly what you imagine when you think of "best summer hiking destinations." I loved just sitting there, taking it all in, feeling completely refreshed. The OCR even captured that feeling of enjoying the scenic view, with a person relaxing on the rocks!
For those planning your own "hiking trips from NYC," a few extra tips based on my experience: While the article mentions water and bug spray, I'd add a light snack or two for your mid-hike break, especially if you plan to linger at Surprise Lake. Wear sturdy hiking shoes – some parts of the trail can be a bit rocky, as pictured in the OCR! Also, definitely download an offline map of the trails before you go, as cell service can be spotty in some areas. This way, you won't miss any of those blue or yellow markers. Another thought: if you prefer a longer or shorter adventure, Bearfort Mountain actually offers diverse trails. While we chose the moderate 4.1-mile, there are easier strolls and more challenging routes, making it adaptable to your mood, as the OCR image of the trail map display hints at. This flexibility really makes it one of the "best summer hiking trails" options.
And for the post-hike reward? You absolutely cannot skip Luc's. After working up an appetite, those Turkey Avocado Fajitas (yes, the ones you saw in the OCR, looking perfectly delicious!) were truly a 10/10 experience. The OCR showed the 'OPEN' sign for Luc's, and trust me, it’s a welcome sight after a great hike. It's the perfect way to refuel and reflect on your adventure. It's these little details that turn a good hike into one of the "best summer hiking trails" experiences.
If you're craving fresh air, incredible "mountain views," and a memorable "summer hiking" adventure without venturing too far from the concrete jungle, Bearfort Mountain should be at the very top of your list. It’s a true gem among the "upstate New York mountains" accessible for a quick escape, offering some of the "top hikes with mountain views" easily reachable from the city.
