Some days you just don’t want to leave the house, the weather is weird, or you’re trying to cut down on screens… but you still want everyone to have a good time. I keep a little “activity rotation” that works for toddlers, bigger kids, and even sleepovers. The best part? Most of these use stuff you already have at home, and you can scale them up or down depending on attention span.

Below are my go-to ideas for easy toddler activities, indoor activities for kids, and summer play—plus a few “I’m bored” crafts that older kids actually enjoy. Pick 1–2 and call it a win. 🙌

Quick setup rules (so it stays fun, not stressful)

1) Put down a “mess zone.” A towel, old sheet, baking tray, or flattened cardboard box instantly makes cleanup easier.

2) Set a tiny goal. Like “10 minutes” or “fill one cup.” Toddlers especially love a clear finish line.

3) Keep a rescue bowl. One bowl for random bits (pom poms, spoons, little toys) so you’re not hunting later.

What you need: small plastic toys (dinosaurs are fun, but any tiny figures work), water, a muffin tin or small cups, and optional food coloring.

How to do it: Drop a toy into each cup, fill with water, freeze overnight. Pop them out and let the kids “rescue” the toys using warm water, spoons, or a baster.

Why it’s great: Fine motor practice, patience, and sensory play without needing fancy supplies.

Little tip: Put the ice “eggs” in a shallow bin so the melting stays contained.

2) Jell-O Toy Rescue (sensory + pretend play) 🍓

If you want a different texture than ice, this is such a fun switch-up. It’s squishy, silly, and keeps hands busy.

What you need: gelatin dessert (prepared and set), small washable toys, a spoon, and a tray.

How to do it: Set toys inside while it’s cooling (or press them in once it’s mostly set). Kids dig them out like little archaeologists.

Cleanup note: Do this on a tray or in the sink. It’s worth it.

3) Pouring Station (the “best activity” for real) 💧

If I could only keep one screen-free activity forever, it might be this. Pouring is weirdly calming for kids.

What you need: cups, measuring spoons, funnels, a small pitcher, and a bin. Use water, or switch to dry items like rice for less splashing.

How to do it: Set up 3–5 containers and let them pour back and forth. Add a funnel and suddenly it’s a whole event.

Make it educational: Talk about “full/empty,” “more/less,” and counting scoops.

4) Farm Animal Washing Station (bath time vibes, no bath required) 🧼

This is perfect when kids want water play but you don’t want a full-on water park in the living room.

What you need: plastic animals (or cars), a small tub of soapy water, a towel, a toothbrush or sponge.

Why kids love it: It’s engineering + sensory play, and they can rebuild it a million times.

6) Pom Pom Push (fine motor magic) 🧶

Simple, cheap, and surprisingly effective for keeping little hands busy.

What you need: a colander or a box with holes, pom poms (or cotton balls), and a spoon/tongs.

How to do it: Push pom poms through the holes using fingers, a spoon, or tongs for an extra challenge.

Skill focus: Hand strength and coordination (and it feels like a game, not “practice”).

Keep it kid-safe: Use stickers or washable markers instead of real polish if you want zero stress.
