Why I’m obsessed with drawing bases lately

Art bases have been saving my life fr. Like… when my brain is stuck on “blank canvas mode” and I still wanna draw something cute, dramatic, or just practice anatomy without crying, a base is the fastest way to get moving. I’ve been collecting art bases 4 you style references (poses, hands, expressions, full bodies) and using them as warm-ups, sketch starters, and even for style experiments.

And yes, I’m saying it clearly because it matters: ALL BASES ARE NOT MINE. If you’re using bases you found online, always check the creator’s rules. Some say “free to use,” some want credit, and some are “do not repost.” I’m not here to break anyone’s boundaries. I’m here to draw better and have fun doing it 😭✨

What a “drawing base” actually helps with (and what it doesn’t)

A base is basically a pre-made pose or structure you can build on. It can be a stick figure pose, a clean lineart body, a hand pose sheet, or even a couple pose (like those “mean girls” energy group poses where everyone’s serving attitude). The best part is it helps you focus on the fun stuff: outfits, hair, facial expressions, rendering, color palettes, and storytelling.

But a base won’t magically fix everything. If you only trace and never study, you’ll feel stuck when you try to draw without it. So I use bases like training wheels: helpful, but I still practice the basics so I can ride on my own later.

My personal rules for using bases (so it stays respectful)

1) Check the usage note. Some base sheets literally say things like “you may use these, no need to credit, credit if you want, it’s up to you.” Others say “do not repost” or “no commercial use.” I follow the note every time.

2) Don’t claim the pose as mine. If I post my finished drawing, I’ll say it was made with a base if the creator wants that.

3) Change enough to make it yours. I treat the base like a skeleton. I add my own face shape, hair, outfit, proportions, and expression. Sometimes I flip the canvas, adjust the shoulders, or change the hand gesture so it fits my character.

4) If it’s “禁止转载 / do not repost,” I don’t repost. Even if it’s tempting. Even if it’s cute. I just don’t.

Types of bases I keep in my “emergency art folder”

1) Full-body pose bases (the “art bases 4 you!” kind)

These are the ones that instantly give you a scene. Standing poses, sitting poses, walking poses, leaning on a wall, holding a bag, turning around, looking over the shoulder… all of that. When I’m practicing character design, I’ll use the same base three times and create three totally different characters.

My favorite exercise: pick one pose base and do “versions” like a mini challenge. I’ll do a normal version (simple outfit), an anime version (bigger eyes, sharper hair shapes), and then something extra like a glow version where I add neon edges and shiny highlights. Sometimes I even do a “zom” vibe (like a spooky palette) just to push myself into colors I don’t normally choose.

2) Couple / duo bases (for drama, comedy, and friendship art)

Duo bases are so good for storytelling. They can be romantic, best-friend chaos, rivals, or that “we’re pretending we don’t care but we do” vibe. If you’ve ever wanted to draw two characters interacting but the spacing feels weird, a duo base fixes that fast.

I also love using duo bases to practice eye-lines. Like, are they looking at each other? Past each other? Is one character confident and the other shy? A base gives you the body language, then you can add the personality.

3) Group pose bases (aka the “MEAN GIRLS” energy)

Group bases are underrated. They’re harder because you have to keep everyone readable, but they’re perfect if you want that squad photo vibe. I call them “mean girls” energy not in a bullying way, but in a “everyone is serving a look and the composition is iconic” way.

When I use a group base, I plan the silhouettes first: who has big hair, who has a long coat, who has a skirt, who has chunky boots. If everyone’s outline looks the same, the drawing looks flat. Bases help you start strong, but you still have to make choices.

4) Hand bases (the real hero category)

Hands are literally my enemy sometimes. Like I’ll draw a gorgeous face and then the hand shows up looking like five noodles. That’s why hand bases for drawing are my comfort zone. Open palm, fist, peace sign, holding a phone, pointing, grabbing a sleeve… I keep a whole swipe folder of these.

How I practice with hand bases:

Step A: I redraw the hand base once, slowly, focusing on the big shapes (palm block + finger blocks).

Step B: I redraw it again but change one thing (longer fingers, different angle, nails, rings, or a glove).

Step C: I put it into a character drawing so it stops feeling like “a random hand floating in space.”

This is the only way my hands started looking less cursed 😭

5) “Location / void” bases (when you don’t want a background but still want a vibe)

Sometimes I want a character-focused piece but the background stresses me out. That’s where I use what I call “void” setups: simple gradients, soft shapes, or minimal scene hints. I’ve seen base packs labeled with stuff like “Location” and “Void” vibes, and honestly it’s a mood.

My trick: I’ll add one prop that suggests a place (like a chair, a window frame, or a printer silhouette) and keep everything else simple. It makes the art feel finished without needing a full detailed environment.

Using bases without making your art look “stiff”

This is the biggest fear people have: “If I use a base, my drawing will look like everyone else’s.” The fix is adding your own rhythm.

Change the line of action. Even a small curve in the spine can add life.

Adjust proportions slightly. Longer legs, shorter torso, bigger head for chibi vibes, smaller head for semi-realism.

Add asymmetry. One shoulder higher, one hand relaxed, hair falling differently on each side. Perfect symmetry can make characters look like mannequins.

Expression is everything. Two drawings can use the same base, but if one character is smirking and the other looks like they’re about to cry, it becomes a totally different story.

My “Drawing with a base” workflow (super simple)

1) Pick the base for the mood. If I want cute: softer pose. If I want confident: strong stance. If I want action: twist + movement.

2) Build a character on top. I decide hair, outfit, and one signature detail (like a ribbon, a jacket, a sword, headphones, anything).

3) Do a clean sketch pass. I don’t trace perfectly. I redraw it so my hand learns the shapes.

4) Lineart (optional). Sometimes I keep it sketchy because it feels more alive.

5) Color + version challenge. I’ll do “NORMAL / ANIME / GLOW” style tests. Even if I only finish one, the experiments teach me a lot.

Common mistakes I made when I first started using bases

Mistake 1: Copying the base too literally. It made my characters feel like they were wearing someone else’s body. Now I treat the base like a guide, not a cage.

Mistake 2: Ignoring the head/neck connection. A base might have a neck angle that doesn’t match the face direction I want. If the neck and jaw don’t agree, the character looks broken.

Mistake 3: Forgetting hands and feet perspective. Even with a base, hands and feet can look off if you don’t match the perspective of the body.

Mistake 4: Posting without checking credits. I’m careful now. If the base creator wants credit, I give it. If it’s not allowed to repost, I don’t repost the base sheet.

Fun prompts to try with any base pack

Prompt 1: Outfit swap. Same pose, two different aesthetics (streetwear vs fantasy armor).

Prompt 2: Emotion swap. Same pose, different face (happy, annoyed, scared, embarrassed).

Prompt 3: Time of day. Morning soft light vs night neon glow.

Prompt 4: Character “roles.” Hero vs villain using the same base, just different styling.

Prompt 5: Hand study day. Pick one hand base and draw it 10 times with tiny changes (nails, rings, gloves, sleeves, different finger spacing).

Little reminder about reposting and respect

I’ve seen base sheets that literally have notes like “铁铁出品 x 禁止转载” which basically means the creator doesn’t want it reposted. I take that seriously. Sharing art resources is fun, but respecting artists is more important. If you’re ever unsure, the safest move is: don’t repost the base image, just talk about how bases helped you and encourage people to find bases from creators who allow use.

What I’m practicing next

Right now I’m focusing on hands (always), plus group compositions because they’re hard but so satisfying when they work. I also want to do more style versions like “normal vs anime vs glow” because it forces me to think about shape language and color choices instead of autopiloting the same look every time.
