Midwives Brew

2025/9/8 Edited to

... Read moreOkay, fellow mamas-to-be, let's talk about the infamous Midwives Brew! If you're like me, reaching those last few weeks – or even days – of pregnancy can feel like an eternity. I was exactly 9 months pregnant, and let me tell you, the anticipation was real! That's when I started hearing whispers about this "Midwives Brew" or "Witches Brew" as some call it, a natural induction cocktail designed to get things moving. I was cautiously optimistic and, after doing my research and chatting with my midwife, decided to give it a try. So, what exactly is in this mysterious drink often discussed in pregnancy circles? The core idea behind Midwives Brew is to combine ingredients that are believed to stimulate uterine contractions and prepare the cervix. While recipes can vary slightly, the most common ingredients you'll find are: Castor Oil: This is often the most talked-about ingredient. It's a powerful laxative, and the theory is that by stimulating your bowels, it can also stimulate uterine contractions. You'll usually find about 2 tablespoons in a brew. Almond Butter: This helps to emulsify the castor oil, making the drink more palatable and easier to digest. Plus, it adds a bit of flavor and healthy fats. Apricot Juice or Pineapple Juice: These juices are typically used as a base. They help mask the taste of the other ingredients and provide a good source of hydration and vitamins. Many recipes, like the one I tried, specifically call for pineapple juice. Lemon Verbena Tea or Red Raspberry Leaf Tea: These herbs are often used in late pregnancy to tone the uterus and prepare it for labor. Lemon verbena also adds a lovely, calming flavor. Now, for the recipe itself! I wanted to make sure everything was well-blended to make it as easy to get down as possible. Here’s what I did: My Midwives Brew Recipe (for one serving): 2 tablespoons cold-pressed Castor Oil (I used a reputable brand for purity) 2 tablespoons Almond Butter (creamy works best!) 1 cup Apricot Juice or Pineapple Juice (I went with pineapple juice for that extra sweetness) 1/2 cup strong Lemon Verbena Tea (brewed and cooled) Instructions: Brew your lemon verbena tea and let it cool completely. In your NutriBullet or a high-speed blender, combine the castor oil, almond butter, apricot/pineapple juice, and cooled lemon verbena tea. Blend on high until the mixture is completely smooth and emulsified. You really want to make sure the castor oil is fully incorporated to avoid any unpleasant textures. Pour into a glass and drink quickly! Some people chill it even further to make it more tolerable. My experience? Well, I won't lie, it wasn't the tastiest drink I've ever had, but it was definitely manageable thanks to the blending! I drank it in the morning, stayed hydrated, and tried to relax. For me, it did kick things into gear, though everyone's body is different. I started experiencing mild contractions a few hours later, which gradually intensified. It felt like my body was finally getting the memo! Important Considerations: Before even thinking about trying Midwives Brew, it is absolutely crucial to discuss it with your healthcare provider – your doctor or midwife. They can advise you based on your specific health history and pregnancy going into your 37 weeks or beyond. This drink is typically only considered for full-term pregnancies (37 weeks or later) and should never be used before then. Listen to your body, stay close to home, and have support around you. My hope in sharing this is to give you a clearer picture of what this "midwife induction cocktail" entails, but always prioritize professional medical advice. Good luck, mamas!
