Day 2 in Switzerland…college study abroad diaries

This trip has been the first 10/10. I cannot believe the day we had today and it makes me feel so lucky that I even get to go abroad. The hike up these mountains was honestly so spiritual and breathtaking… and of course I have the pictures to prove it. If you’re planning for study abroad, definitely put interlaken Switzerland on your list!! I can’t recommend it enough… #lemon8college #lemon8partner #collegetravel #collegestudyabroad #collegetravels

... Read moreAfter that truly unforgettable second day exploring the majestic Swiss mountains around Interlaken, I realized how much more there is to a study abroad experience than just breathtaking hikes and scenic views. While my diary entry focused on the adventure, I want to share some insights for fellow students considering Switzerland for their study abroad journey, especially concerning university life, adapting to a new environment, and making the most of your time here as a student. Balancing academics with adventure is absolutely key. Even when you're surrounded by stunning snowy mountain landscapes, the academic rigor of Swiss universities, known for their high standards, expects dedication. I quickly learned the importance of planning my week meticulously, dedicating specific times for coursework and readings, which then allowed me to truly savor those breathtaking weekend excursions. It’s not always about finding a specific 'campus' in the traditional sense for every program, especially if you're on an exchange that emphasizes field trips or integrated modules, but understanding the academic rhythm and expectations is vital. Many students, myself included, found comfort and focus in cozy cafes. There’s nothing quite like a perfectly crafted latte art coffee paired with a flaky powdered sugar croissant to fuel a productive study session – a little luxury that somehow makes the workload feel more manageable and adds to the charm of student life here! Exploring the mountains isn't just for incredible photo opportunities; it's deeply enriching. Before heading out for any mountain adventure, whether it's a strenuous hike or just a scenic walk, ensure you have the right hiking gear. The weather can change quickly, so layers are essential. I’ve had moments looking out the car window, utterly captivated by the beauty, but nothing compares to the feeling of standing on a groomed snowy slope, taking in a 360-degree panoramic view of snow-covered peaks and pine trees under a bright blue sky. The sense of accomplishment after a challenging hike, or even just rolling around in the fresh snow with friends, is immense, and it’s a fantastic way to bond with other international students and locals alike. For those keen on cultural immersion beyond the landscapes, don't forget to check out local markets and souvenir shops. I loved collecting unique vintage postcards – they make great personalized mementos and conversation starters back home, a tangible piece of my Swiss student adventure. Living as a student in Switzerland can indeed be pricey, but there are definitely smart ways to manage your budget. Always look for student discounts, invest in a student travel pass if available, and try cooking some meals yourself instead of eating out frequently. Exploring free activities like hiking, visiting local parks, or attending free cultural events can also significantly reduce costs. Connecting with local students or other international students can open doors to invaluable insider tips for affordable fun and truly immersing yourself in the local culture, giving you a taste of authentic student life. This entire study abroad experience isn't just about seeing new places; it's about growing personally, learning academically, and making lifelong memories as a student abroad, truly appreciating the unique opportunity to learn and explore simultaneously in such a stunning country.
