MUST-DO ACTIVITIES IN ISTANBUL, TURKEY

Istanbul is a city of history, beautiful markets, and food that'll leave you craving more. If you're planning a trip to here, check out these experiences in Istanbul:

EAT A TRADITIONAL TURKISH BREAKFAST AT SEVEN HILLS RESTAURANT

✨Kick off your day Istanbul-style with a breakfast at Seven Hills Restaurant, where you can enjoy gorgeous city views. Think olives, cheeses, fresh bread, and a range of tasty spreads.

✨Expect to pay around 40 to 80 Turkish Lira (that's about $5 to $10) per person for this delightful breakfast.

✨Arrive early to snag a spot with a view and don't forget to sip some traditional Turkish tea.

GO SHOPPING IN THE GRAND BAZAAR

✨Immerse yourself in the bustling vibes of the Grand Bazaar, a market with over 4,000 shops. You can find just about anything here, from handwoven rugs to exotic spices, jewelry, and Turkish treats.

✨Bargain like a pro for the best deals, and be ready for a bit of a maze while you explore.

VISIT THE BLUE MOSQUE

✨Step inside the awe-inspiring Blue Mosque, or Sultan Ahmed Mosque as it's officially known. Marvel at the beautiful blue tiles, grand domes, and six minarets. It's a dazzling piece of Ottoman architecture.

✨There's no entrance fee

✨Dress modestly, particularly ladies - cover your heads and shoulders. Visit during non-prayer times for a more tranquil experience.

SEE THE HAGIA SOPHIA MOSQUE

✨Explore the legendary Hagia Sophia, a building that's been a cathedral, a mosque, and now a museum. You'll be wowed by its architecture, mosaics, and history.

✨The entrance fee was approximately 100 Turkish Lira (around $13) for adults

✨Verify operating hours. Expect crowds and aim to arrive early to beat them.

... Read moreIstanbul truly captured my heart with its vibrant pulse and rich history! While the main attractions are an absolute must, I discovered that delving a little deeper into the city's unique charm made my trip even more special. Here are some extra insights and experiences I believe every visitor to Turkey should consider. First off, let's talk more about the Grand Bazaar. My first sight of its ornate, historic exterior entrance was just the beginning of a truly immersive shopping adventure. It’s not just about haggling; it’s about the experience! Beyond the classic rugs and spices, I found stunning ceramic plates, intricate mosaic lamps, and beautiful silver jewelry. Don't be afraid to get a little lost in its labyrinthine alleys – that's where you find the real treasures and unique items. I always aim to negotiate politely; it's part of the fun and tradition! After all that walking and bargaining, I loved finding a small, hidden cafe within the bazaar for a strong Turkish coffee and a moment to soak it all in. Speaking of food, my experience with a traditional Turkish breakfast spread in Istanbul was heavenly. While the Seven Hills Istanbul breakfast is famed for its incredible views over the Hagia Sophia (I could see it clearly from my table!), I also sought out some smaller, local spots. These cafes often serve a similar, sprawling breakfast with an array of fresh cheeses, olives, honey with kaymak (clotted cream), various jams, eggs, and freshly baked bread like simit. It’s not just a meal; it’s a social event, often lasting for hours. I even found a charming Turkish couple cafe in Istanbul that served an authentic spread with a cozy, welcoming atmosphere – a perfect start to any day. Beyond the iconic mosques like the Blue Mosque and the grand Hagia Sophia Mosque (whose majestic interior with large chandeliers and intricate details left me speechless), there are so many other Turkish activities to fill your days. I highly recommend taking a Bosphorus cruise, especially around sunset. The views of the city skyline, palaces, and fortresses from the water are truly some of the beautiful best views in the world and give a completely different perspective of Istanbul. For a taste of daily life, wandering through the local neighborhoods like Kadikoy on the Asian side offers a different vibe, with trendy cafes and street art. And you absolutely cannot visit Istanbul without trying the street food! I loved grabbing a freshly baked simit from a vendor in the morning. Keep an eye out for the Istanbul chestnut guy – the smell of roasted chestnuts filling the air is simply irresistible, especially on a cooler evening. Other must-try Turkish food items include balik ekmek (fish sandwich) by the Galata Bridge, and don't forget a delicious dondurma (Turkish ice cream) for a fun, interactive treat. These simple pleasures truly add to the vibrant Istanbul atmosphere. Finally, a quick note on practicality: if you're traveling during summer, understanding the summer Istanbul dress code for tourists is helpful. While the city is generally modern, out of respect when visiting mosques, it’s best for women to carry a headscarf (some places provide them) and wear modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees. For general wear, light, breathable fabrics are your best friend as you explore this incredible city in Turkey. Enjoy every moment of your adventure!
