Things to do in Istanbul, Turkey 🇹🇷

I left Istanbul a few days ago and although it was hot it was a lot of fun! The best part of Istanbul is the food, but here are some things you can do in between eating 😋🍽️

🙏🏾Blue Mosque & Hagia Sophia Visit: Both are religious centers (mosques) you can see in person, as they are located very closely to one another (a 6 min walk away). Make sure you wear clothing that covers below the knee and your shoulders. They will also give you a head covering at the door.

🛍️Emaar Mall: This mall is on the Asia side of Istanbul and you can easily take the ferry or the metro from one side to the other using a red Istanbul public transportation card. There are high end luxury shops and regular stores (such as Sephora or H&M) and it’s a really pretty place to shop for the day.

👚Vintage Shopping: Istanbul has quite a few vintage shops located near the Galata Tower, which is another popular tourist place to visit. I spent a few hours perusing the shops on one street directly across from the tower, which was an afternoon well spent for me.

🌶️Grand Bazaar or Egyptian Market: Both are HUGE market places where you can buy spices, teas, souvenirs, and cool Turkish pieces. I got lost a few times in the Grand Bazaar because it’s just THAT BIG.

💦Basilica Cistern: This is an underground museum that was once used as an actual cistern to supply water to the city of Istanbul. It’s $22 to enter, and much easier to buy your ticket online.

Save this for your Istanbul trip planning!

... Read moreBeyond the incredible historical sites, I quickly discovered Istanbul is a foodie's paradise! While the original article touches on the amazing food, I have to share some of my absolute culinary highlights. For a truly local experience, don't miss trying balik ekmek (fish sandwich) by the Galata Bridge – it's simple, fresh, and utterly delicious. Another must-try is a traditional Turkish breakfast, usually a lavish spread of cheeses, olives, jams, eggs, and freshly baked bread. My personal favorite spot was a small cafe in Kadıköy; their menemen (scrambled eggs with tomatoes and peppers) was out of this world! When you're exploring the markets, definitely indulge in some Turkish delights and baklava. I picked up some amazing spiced teas and dried fruits from a vendor in the Grand Bazaar that I'm still enjoying. While the Grand Bazaar is an experience in itself, I also loved wandering through the lesser-known side streets near the Galata Tower. After finding some fantastic vintage pieces, I decided to climb the tower for panoramic views of the city – definitely a photo opportunity that can't be missed! For a truly relaxing escape, I highly recommend a ferry trip across the Bosphorus. It’s an inexpensive way to see the city from a different perspective, connecting the European and Asian sides mentioned in the original post (especially if you're heading to Emaar Mall!). You can even take a longer ferry to the Princes' Islands for a car-free day of cycling and tranquility. For art lovers, I stumbled upon Istanbul Modern. It was a refreshing change of pace from the historical sites and offered a fantastic collection of Turkish contemporary art. And for those looking to immerse themselves in tradition, a visit to a local hamam for a Turkish bath was an unforgettable, rejuvenating experience. Getting around Istanbul is surprisingly easy once you get the hang of it! Investing in an Istanbulkart is a game-changer for using the metro, tram, and ferries – it saved me so much time and hassle. I wish I'd known how crucial it was to buy it right away! Also, a quick note on visiting mosques like the Blue Mosque or Hagia Sophia: the article rightly reminds you about covering your shoulders and knees. I found it helpful to carry a lightweight scarf with me always, not just for the mosque but also for cooler evenings. It’s a sign of respect and ensures you can enter these magnificent places without a hitch. And don't be afraid to haggle a bit in the bazaars – it's part of the fun and expected! Lastly, while it was hot during my visit, spring and autumn offer milder weather, which might be perfect if you're planning extensive outdoor explorations.
