Why Is Wanting Fair Pay So Offensive?😮‍💨💰

My last post sparked a lot of feelings… which tells me this conversation is overdue….

🌶️🔥Hot take: caring about people doesn’t mean working for free.

I’m an LVN. I show up, advocate, think critically, and carry responsibility every single day. Loving what I do doesn’t cancel out wanting fair compensation. Both can exist.

You can love your job, show up fully, and still believe fair pay matters. Those ideas don’t cancel each other out.

So let’s talk — why does wanting better pay trigger people so much? 👀👇🏾👇🏾👇🏾

#lemon8challenge #letschat #cozychats #nurse #AskLemon8 Dallas

2025/12/27 Edited to

... Read moreAs a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN), it’s clear that dedication to the profession and fair compensation are not mutually exclusive. Many in healthcare, especially nurses, face significant responsibilities daily — advocating for patients, critical thinking in fast-paced situations, and bearing emotional and physical demands. Despite this, the conversation around fair pay remains fraught with tension and misunderstanding. The controversy often arises from outdated societal views that caring professions should be motivated solely by passion and selflessness. While passion is fundamental, it doesn’t replace the need for fair wages that reflect the skill, effort, and risks involved. Advocating for better pay is a crucial part of recognizing the true value nurses bring to the healthcare system. Professionals loving their jobs but wanting better pay is a completely valid position. It reflects a desire for respect and financial security, not a lack of dedication. Discussions around fair pay encourage vital conversations about healthcare funding, resource allocation, and valuing frontline workers appropriately. Moreover, unfair compensation can lead to burnout, staffing shortages, and diminished quality of patient care. When nurses feel undervalued financially, it affects morale and retention rates, ultimately impacting healthcare outcomes. Recognizing that "You can love your job AND want better pay" helps shift the narrative towards meaningful reforms. This conversation is especially important in places like Dallas and other metropolitan areas with high living costs where LVNs and other healthcare workers struggle to meet basic expenses. The essential takeaway is that fair compensation supports not only individual nurses but the entire healthcare ecosystem by promoting sustainability and high standards of care. In summary, advocating for fair pay doesn’t undermine commitment—it reinforces it. It’s time for society to support healthcare professionals in both passion and pay, ensuring they receive the dignity and remuneration they deserve.

Because it challenges systems built on underpaying people. Wanting fair pay threatens comfort, not morality, and that makes some people defensive instead of empathetic.

I think it's because fair pay is different for everyone and the cost of living everywhere is so different that what looks like fair to one person may not be for some one else. Just my two cents.
