Invisible Mom Guilt

People don’t see the whole picture when they see me asking for help. One of the hardest parts of motherhood with POTS is needing more help than I ever imagined. From the outside, it can look like I’m not doing enough, but the truth is I’m fighting twice as hard behind the scenes. The guilt of how others might see me is heavy, but I’m learning to remind myself that my son doesn’t see less of a mom. He sees love, care, and presence. Moms, do you ever feel judged for how you parent when people don’t know the whole story?

... Read moreLiving with a chronic illness like POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome) as a mom can often bring a unique set of challenges that many outside observers don’t fully understand. The 'chronic illness mom guilt' is a genuine emotional burden, stemming from the invisible nature of symptoms and the misunderstanding by others about the effort it takes to manage daily parenting responsibilities. Many moms with POTS face fluctuating symptoms such as dizziness, fatigue, and heart rate irregularities, which can limit their physical capabilities at times. This reality often means asking for help more frequently than they or others may have anticipated. However, feeling judged or misunderstood because of these needs can intensify feelings of inadequacy and guilt, even though their love and dedication to their children remain unwavering. It's important for moms experiencing this invisible struggle to remember that the quality of care and emotional presence they provide is what truly matters to their children. Children often perceive the love and support they receive, rather than focusing on physical limitations or the amount of help their parent requires. Building a supportive community, whether through online forums using hashtags like #strongmoms, #embracevulnerability, or #chronicillness, can offer these moms a valuable outlet to share experiences and find encouragement. Openness about their challenges helps reduce stigma and fosters a more empathetic understanding among family, friends, and society. Self-compassion and redefining personal expectations are crucial steps in managing mom guilt. Acknowledging the invisible efforts and victories behind the scenes can empower moms to embrace their journey without the weight of external judgment. After all, being a mom is less about perfection and more about resilience, love, and presence.
