Places in Montana that are unreal

If you needed a reason to travel to Montana, look no further than these spots that feel out of this world!

Flathead Lake

You’ll want to go to Finley Point at Flathead Lake to see the majestic colorful rocks here! You can also kayak parts of this lake, we recommend going with Sea Me Paddle Kayaking & SUP tours.

Big Sky

Absolutely breathtaking anytime of year including a popular winter ski resort town. We went in the late summer and enjoyed a cabin/ranch stay at Lone Mountain Ranch. This is a great place to hike, horseback ride, and enjoy mountain life.

Livingston

This colorful western town is the coolest stop for anyone who loves nostalgia as they have tons of old-school neon signs in the businesses downtown! Feels like a movie set!

Glacier National Park

Is full of natural wonders and some of the country’s last remaining glaciers! Enjoy hikes up to glaciers, biking, scenic boat rides, and more in one of the most beautiful national parks in the world!

One thing you don’t want to miss is the Lake McDonald boat ride from Lake McDonald Lodge and the view from Apgar!

Montana
2024/8/4 Edited to

... Read moreOkay, let me tell you, Montana is seriously something else. I've been lucky enough to visit a few times, and each trip just blows my mind. When people ask what "real Montana" is like, I always point to places like these. It's not just pretty; it’s genuinely breathtaking and leaves you feeling so connected to nature. First up, Flathead Lake. That mention of the colorful rocks at Finley Point is spot on! I remember standing there, just mesmerized by the smooth, vibrant pebbles visible through the crystal-clear water. It feels like Mother Nature painted the lakebed. If you plan to kayak, going in late spring or early fall means fewer crowds and the water can still be lovely. Beyond kayaking, just picnicking on the shore and watching the light change over the water is an experience in itself. Don't forget your camera for those unique rock formations! Then there’s Big Sky. While everyone knows it for skiing, going in the summer was a revelation. Staying at Lone Mountain Ranch, as mentioned in the article, was a dream. Imagine waking up to mountain views, then heading out for a horseback ride through alpine meadows. The air is so crisp, and the scenery is just postcard-perfect. We spent an afternoon hiking some of the lower trails, and the wildflowers were incredible. It’s truly a place where you can disconnect and embrace that authentic mountain life, whether you're shredding powder or exploring trails. Livingston was such a charming surprise! That 'movie set' vibe from the old-school neon signs downtown is no exaggeration. It’s like stepping back in time with a cool, artsy twist. I loved wandering around, popping into the antique shops, and grabbing a coffee at a local cafe. It's a great base if you're exploring the Yellowstone area but want a more local, less touristy feel. Plus, the views of the Yellowstone River and the surrounding mountains are spectacular. And of course, Glacier National Park. 'Natural wonders' doesn't even begin to cover it! The boat ride on Lake McDonald was a highlight for me. Seeing those majestic, cloud-covered mountains reflected in the water, with the colourful smooth pebbles along the shore, was pure magic. If you're into hiking, definitely look into trails like Hidden Lake Overlook or Avalanche Lake for stunning vistas. Just remember to go early to beat the crowds, especially in peak season. And always, always be bear aware! The "Going-to-the-Sun Road" is an absolute must-drive for incredible overlooks. It’s humbling to think about the last remaining glaciers here and what a privilege it is to witness such raw, powerful beauty. For anyone planning a trip to these beautiful places, I'd say pack layers, because Montana weather can be unpredictable. And embrace the adventure! Whether it’s spotting wildlife, exploring a quaint town, or just sitting by a lake, Montana offers experiences that truly don't feel real. It's a place that calls you back again and again.
