8 Boundaries for People Who Gaslight You

Setting boundaries with people who gaslight you is essential for your mental and emotional well-being. Here are some tips on how to establish boundaries with individuals who gaslight you:

1. Recognize Gaslighting Behavior: Be aware of the signs of gaslighting so you can identify when it's happening to you.

2. Trust Your Feelings: Believe in your own feelings, intuition and perceptions. Don't let the gaslighter make you doubt yourself.

3. Set Clear Boundaries: Clearly communicate your boundaries to the person engaging in gaslighting behavior. Let them know what behavior is unacceptable.

4. Firm: Stand firm in your boundaries and don't waver, even if the gaslighter tries to manipulate or confuse you.

5. Limit Contact: If possible, limit your contact with the individual who gaslights you to protect yourself from their behavior.

6 . Seek Support: Talk to your best friend, family member or therapist about your experiences with gaslighting. They can provide support and help you process your feelings.

7. Practice Self-Care: Take care of yourself by engaging in activities that bring you joy, relaxation and peace. Self-care is crucial when dealing with toxic relationships.

Remember, it's important to prioritize your well-being and mental health when dealing with gaslighting behavior. You deserve to be treated with respect and understanding.

... Read moreIt took me a long time to even understand what was happening. I felt confused, doubted my memories, and constantly questioned my sanity. That's the insidious nature of gaslighting – it makes you feel like you're the problem. If you've ever felt this way, you're not alone, and it's definitely not your fault. So, what exactly is gaslighting? It's a form of psychological manipulation where a person makes you question your own memory, perception, or sanity. They might deny events that clearly happened, twist your words, or tell you that you're 'too sensitive' or 'crazy.' For instance, imagine you bring up something hurtful they said, and they respond with, 'I never said that, you're making things up,' or 'Why are you always so dramatic?' This is a classic tactic designed to destabilize you and gain control. In a romantic relationship, a gaslighter might dismiss your feelings during an argument, saying 'You're overreacting' or 'That never happened.' They might even try to turn others against you by painting you as unstable. In friendships, it can look like them consistently minimizing your achievements, blaming you for their mistakes, or making you feel guilty for expressing your needs. It's often subtle at first, making it incredibly hard to pinpoint. I remember a friend who would constantly 'forget' plans we made, then make me feel like *I* was the unreliable one for reminding them. Recognizing these patterns is the first step, but then comes the hard part: standing your ground. This is where setting those firm boundaries, as mentioned in the main article, becomes absolutely vital. It’s not just about saying 'No,' but about clearly communicating your reality and what you will and won't accept. Phrases like those I wish I'd known earlier, such as 'My feelings are valid even if you don't agree,' or 'I won't continue this conversation if you keep dismissing what I'm saying,' are incredibly powerful. They shift the focus back to your experience and reinforce your perception. Another effective statement is, 'I remember it differently,' or 'I know what I saw/heard.' You don't need to argue or convince them; you just state your truth. When you establish a boundary, like 'If you continue to deny my experiences, I will end this conversation,' you have to be prepared to follow through. This might mean physically removing yourself, hanging up the phone, or simply disengaging. It feels incredibly difficult, especially when you're used to trying to 'fix' things or seek their validation. But remember, a boundary isn't meant to control the other person; it's meant to protect *you*. It's about taking back your power and prioritizing your mental well-being. This ties directly into practicing self-care—if you're constantly fighting for your reality, you'll be drained. Lean on your support system, whether it's a trusted friend, family member, or therapist, who can affirm your experiences and remind you that you're not imagining things. They can help you solidify your resolve and remind you that you deserve respect and understanding, always.
