How to fly to Italy for less than $300! ✈️ 🇮🇹

Here’s how I found a flight to Venice, Italy for only $280👇

🐇 I used the Hopper app. This app gave me a complete overview of what days contained the cheapest flights available and it even notified me when prices dropped and gave me advice for when to book!

📆I traveled in the beginning of March, which was during the off-season when prices are lower since there aren’t as many tourists during this time.

🛫I was flexible with airports. Instead of flying out of the airport I usually fly from (Philadelphia) I searched for other nearby airports to compare prices. The JFK airport in New York City had significantly lower prices compared to the rest!

🧳I paid attention to whether the airline I chose included checked baggage or not. It can be so easy to forget about how much it might cost to check our baggage, so be sure to be aware of this when booking your flights so you can find a good deal! And it’s almost ALWAYS more affordable to bring a carryon bag instead of a large checked bag.

Hope this helps! 🫶🏻

... Read moreOkay, so you've seen how I snagged that incredible flight to Venice for under $300, and trust me, that feeling of getting such a steal is absolutely addictive! But what if you're looking for even more ways to crack the code on cheap flights to Italy, or perhaps you want to ensure you consistently find those deals? I've got even more tried-and-true tricks up my sleeve that I use every time I'm planning a budget-friendly escape to Europe. First off, while the Hopper app is a fantastic starting point for price predictions and alerts, it's smart to cast a wider net. I always cross-reference with tools like Google Flights and Skyscanner. These platforms are brilliant for exploring flexible dates and even destinations. For instance, instead of fixed dates, try searching for "entire month" or "cheapest month" on Google Flights to see the full spectrum of pricing. You might discover that shifting your trip by just a few days can save you hundreds! Skyscanner has an "everywhere" destination option which is super fun for general travel inspiration, but you can also use it to compare prices to different Italian cities. Sometimes flying into a larger hub like Milan or Rome, even if your final destination is Florence or Venice, can be significantly cheaper, and then you can hop on a high-speed train for a scenic and affordable connection. Speaking of timing, traveling during the off-season was a game-changer for my Venice trip in March. But let's dig a bit deeper into what that truly means for Italy. Generally, late fall to early spring (November through February, excluding the Christmas/New Year holidays) offers the lowest prices. Not only are flights and accommodation cheaper, but you'll also experience fewer crowds at popular attractions. Imagine exploring the Colosseum without masses of tourists! The weather might be cooler, but Italy is beautiful year-round, and a crisp winter day exploring charming streets can be incredibly romantic. Just pack layers! And let's talk more about being flexible with airports. My original article mentioned opting for JFK over Philadelphia. This principle applies to your arrival city in Italy too! Don't just search for flights directly to your dream town. Look at major international airports nearby. For example, instead of flying directly to Venice Marco Polo (VCE), consider Milan Malpensa (MXP) or Rome Fiumicino (FCO). From these larger airports, Italy's excellent train system can whisk you away to almost any city quickly and affordably. I've personally saved hundreds by flying into a major hub and taking a €30-50 train ride to my final stop. Finally, the baggage situation is where many people get caught out. My golden rule is: always try for a carry-on only. This isn't just about saving money on checked bags; it also saves you time at the airport and reduces the risk of lost luggage. Research your airline's specific carryon and personal item dimensions before you pack. Budget airlines like Ryanair or EasyJet can be very strict. I swear by packing cubes to maximize space, and I wear my bulkiest items on the plane. If you absolutely need a checked bag, sometimes booking directly with the airline a few weeks before departure can be cheaper than paying at the airport. Learning to pack light is a skill, but it’s one that will serve your wallet well on every adventure. By combining these strategies – using multiple flight search engines, embracing off-season travel, being super flexible with both departure and arrival airports, and becoming a carryon packing pro – you'll be well on your way to finding your own incredible deal to Italy, just like I did!
