How to Sing High Notes

Having trouble with those high notes? One of my favorite tricks is to add a whiny ‘ay’ sound to help lighten up the voice and reduce strain. 🎤 This technique allows the vocal cords to stretch more easily and gives you better control at the top of your range.

💡 Pro Tip: Practice by transitioning from a full voice to the whiny sound as you go higher, and soon you’ll notice a huge difference in ease and quality!

... Read moreOkay, so for all my fellow female singers out there, hitting those high notes without straining can feel like a superpower! I remember when I used to dread those moments in a song, thinking I'd either crack or totally lose my voice. The 'whiny ay' trick is a game-changer, as it really helps stretch those vocal cords gently, almost tricking them into a lighter, more agile mode. It stops you from pushing too hard, which is usually the main culprit for strain. Beyond that awesome 'ay' sound, there are a few other things that have totally transformed my high note game. First, breath support is EVERYTHING. Seriously, imagine a strong column of air pushing from your diaphragm – not your throat! This energy from below takes the pressure off your vocal cords, letting them vibrate freely. I often do exercises like 'sizzle' sounds (like a snake) or 'shh' sounds on a long exhale to build that muscle memory. Also, don't underestimate proper posture. Standing tall and keeping your neck relaxed makes a huge difference. If you're hunched over or tensing up, your vocal cords can't do their job efficiently. I always try to imagine a string pulling me up from the top of my head! And let's talk about vocal warm-ups. Before I even attempt those tricky high notes, I make sure my voice is properly warmed up. Gentle sirens, lip trills, and humming scales are my go-tos. This prepares your voice and prevents damage. After a good session, a gentle cool-down (like soft humming descending scales) is just as important to help your vocal cords recover. The key with the 'whiny ay' is to integrate it smoothly. It might sound a little 'weird' at first, but as you practice transitioning from your full voice, you’ll notice it helps to 'balance out the sound' and achieve those 'new high notes' beautifully. It's about finding that sweet spot where you're not pushing, but also not sounding too thin. Keep experimenting, listen to your body, and you'll be soaring to those high notes with ease!
