A SINGER’S GUIDE… (A Series): #1

IMPORTANT: I’m not teaching you how to sing—I just wanted to give tips on how to maintain the quality of your voice. and you don’t need to be an opera singer to follow these tips! classical music is the foundation of all music (i.e., why pianists are first taught Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart), so it’s connected to all types of music in one way or another.

•••

something that I love about being classically trained is the fact that we’re taught the ins-and-outs of our instruments, what’s important (and why), etc. I wanted to share what I’ve been taught over the years (I’ve been training and taking lessons since I was 7), and hopefully others can find use of it in their own lives (whether it be professional, educational, hobby, or just curious!).

I’m making a series of this, and I hope you enjoy!

TEAS I RECOMMEND / CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT:

... Read moreMaintaining a healthy voice is truly a lifelong journey, and for me, it all started with understanding one fundamental principle: your body is your instrument. Just like any fine instrument, it needs careful care and consistent maintenance to perform at its best. I've spent years training, and one of the most impactful lessons I've learned is the absolute necessity of proper hydration. It’s not just about sounding good; it’s about protecting your vocal cords from strain and damage. Why Hydration Truly Matters for Your Voice We often hear "hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!" but do we really understand the science behind it for singers? Your vocal cords are incredibly delicate muscles, covered in a thin layer of mucous. When you sing, these cords vibrate hundreds, sometimes thousands, of times per second. Without adequate hydration, that mucous layer thins, leading to increased friction, dryness, and a scratchy, agitated feeling. Think of it like trying to oil a rusty machine – it won't move smoothly. My teachers always stressed that by drinking enough water to 'pee pale', you ensure that your entire system, including those tiny vocal folds, is well-lubricated and flexible. This flexibility is crucial for navigating your vocal range with ease and producing clear, resonant tones. Practical Hydration Habits Beyond Just Drinking Water Making hydration a consistent part of your routine can be challenging, but it’s so worth it. I've found that carrying a reusable water bottle everywhere helps immensely. Setting hourly reminders on my phone also nudges me to take sips throughout the day. And it’s not just about plain water! While water is king, especially avoiding drinking ice-cold water (which can tense up your vocal muscles), integrating other forms of hydration is key. Consider using a humidifier, especially in dry climates or during winter months. This environmental moisture can make a huge difference in how your vocal cords feel, preventing that parched sensation that no amount of internal hydration can fully fix on its own. The Tea About Tea (and Other Vocal Hot Drinks) My journey with vocal health has given me a real appreciation for warm drinks. The OCR mentioned "the tea about tea," and it's so true! While I love my Bigelow Lemon Ginger and Traditional Medicinals Throat Coat, exploring other options can be beneficial. Look for herbal teas with ingredients like licorice root, marshmallow root, or slippery elm, which are known for their demulcent (soothing, coating) properties. A simple cup of warm water with a squeeze of lemon and a spoonful of honey can also work wonders – the honey has natural antibacterial properties, and lemon can help cut through any phlegm. Sometimes, even a warm, clear vegetable broth can be incredibly comforting and hydrating, offering electrolytes without the dehydrating effects of caffeine or alcohol. Battling the Dehydration Culprits: Caffeine & Alcohol This is a big one for singers, and something I learned early on: consistently avoid caffeine & alcohol, especially before performances. Both are diuretics, meaning they cause your body to excrete more fluid, directly leading to caffeine dehydration in your vocal cords. That feeling of a dry, tight throat after a cup of coffee or a glass of wine? That's your vocal cords crying for moisture. While I understand we all respond differently, and it’s important to understand your own body, for me, cutting these out entirely, or at least greatly minimizing them, has been a game-changer. If you absolutely need a warm morning drink, consider decaf herbal coffee alternatives or simply warm water. Remember, don’t procrastinate on hydration! Building up your hydration levels days in advance, especially before a big vocal event, is far more effective than trying to chug water last minute. Your voice will thank you!
