8 things to consider before getting starter locs:

1) Size — Do you want thicker or slimmer locs?

2) Number — How many locs do you want?

3) Method — Do you want to start your locs instantly (crochet), with 2-strand twists, braids, or comb coils?

4) Maintenance — What would maintenance look like for you? Do you plan on doing your own hair or growing with a loctician? Would you want traditional palm rolling or crochet maintenance?

5) Grid — What do you want your parts to look like?; Squares, C’s, natural, triangles, puzzle pieces?? *Rolls eyes at last option*

6) Lifestyle — How does your lifestyle look with you having locs and how will it accommodate your new journey?

7) Cost — If you plan on growing with a loctician, what’s your hair maintenance budget and how often are you looking to freshen up your locs?

8) Products — What products have you considered for the care of your locs at home? Oil-based, organic, or the same products you’ve been using?

I know. I gave you a lot to think about. These are some of the questions I ask before installing starter locs. Most of these questions can be answered after a thorough consultation with your loctician. It’s time to loc in!

Save this post if you’re thinking about starting your loc journey!

... Read moreStarting your locs requires thoughtful consideration to ensure the process aligns with your lifestyle and preferences. First, consider the size of your locs; thicker locs may be more noticeable but slimmer ones might offer easier styling options. Next, determine how many locs you'd like, as this can affect both the overall look and the time required for maintenance. Choosing a method is also vital; options include instant crochet techniques, two-strand twists, braids, or comb coils. The right method can depend on your hair type and desired final look. Maintenance is another crucial point—decide if you'll manage your locs yourself or if you'll seek help from a professional loctician, and consider the cost involved in maintaining your locs regularly. Additionally, think about the grid design of your locs. The patterns can significantly impact the aesthetic of your locs. Lifestyle compatibility is essential too; ensure your loc journey fits seamlessly into your daily routine. Furthermore, budget for the costs associated with starting and maintaining locs. Lastly, carefully select products that will nourish and care for your locs, opting for oil-based, organic alternatives, or sticking with your current products if they work for you. By considering these aspects, you can embark on a fulfilling and stylish loc journey.
