Spotting patterns is a flex

Sometimes what gets called “intuition” is actually pattern recognition.

Many neurodivergent people spend years noticing inconsistencies, reading between the lines, and trying to make sense of confusing social experiences.

No, we’re not psychic.

But we often become highly attuned to when words and actions don’t match, when something feels performative, or when a story doesn’t quite add up.

Of course, intuition isn’t infallible. We can misread situations too. But there’s a reason so many neurodivergent people have had the experience of sensing that something was “off” long before they could explain why.

Anyone relate? 👀

If you want more content like this in longer-form, comment Substack and I’ll send over a link. Lots of Free science with soul, and lots to come.

... Read moreIn my own experience, I've found that what many call intuition is really an ability to pick up on subtle patterns and discrepancies that others might miss. This skill often develops through repeated exposure to complex or confusing interactions, especially for neurodivergent people who naturally notice when something feels 'off.' For example, in social situations, I've caught myself sensing insincerity or performative behavior not because of any psychic ability, but due to my brain's heightened attention to details like tone, body language, and inconsistencies between what is said and what is done. This kind of pattern recognition can be quite empowering, helping to navigate tricky personal or professional relationships with more confidence. However, it's important to remember that this intuition isn't always perfect—we can misinterpret cues or jump to conclusions. Practicing mindfulness and seeking clarification can balance this skill, ensuring we don’t become overly suspicious or anxious about social cues. The phrase from the accompanying image, “The neurodivergent flex of spotting fake and performative BS from miles away,” rings very true to me. It highlights a shared strength within the neurodivergent community: the ability to see beyond surface-level interactions and recognize underlying dynamics. If you relate to this, acknowledging it as a strength rather than a burden can be transformative. It fosters self-trust and can guide better decision-making in relationships and other contexts. Sharing these experiences within communities or forums focused on ADHD and neurodivergence can also validate and expand understanding of this unique perceptiveness. Ultimately, embracing pattern recognition as a valuable cognitive resource enhances resilience and supports thriving despite challenges associated with neurodivergence.

Going beyond recognizing your patterns is to understand why they are there in the first place. Our nervous system holds the key to this! Ask yourself these questions the next time you catch yourself in a behavior or thought that you don't prefer, drop into your body, and let it speak to you~
