I’m finally ready to open up about a chapter in my life that reshaped my understanding of strength and resilience. A time marked by an abusive relationship during an already heart-wrenching period, when one of my closest friends was battling COVID-19. This was one of the HARDEST periods of my life that has forever changed me.
💔 In the beginning of 2021, I was a shadow of myself. I was under constant anxiety, stress, and the toll of physical and psychological abuse from someone I thought loved me, left me drained. I lost 20lbs, stopped eating, and gave up on workouts - things that used to define me. The confident, motivated, and optimistic me was gone.
😔 In a time when I had hoped to be receiving love, support, and empathy due to losing one of my closest friends, I was getting quite the opposite.
📚 It was my sister who introduced me to "Psychopath Free" by Jackson Mackenzie. This book, particularly the chapter on 'Spotting Toxic People', was a mirror to my situation. Every point, every example resonated with my situation. It was as if my abuser was following a play by play.
🌈 The journey of healing began with recognizing the toxicity I was submerged in. It's scary how the manipulative patterns of abusers - the sob stories, the gifts, the empty apologies - can blind us to reality.
🫶The moment I recognized the situation, I left immediately. I am so so fortunate and forever grateful that I have such amazing support and love from friends and family in my life. They saved me.
