how to tell if you’re being emotionally abused:

when you hear the word abuse, it sounds really ugly - like something that would be perpetuated by a stranger, someone evil and angry.

the hard truth is that abuse is something we face most often at the hands of the people we love ⤵️

abusers can be your mom, your dad, your sibling. your boyfriend, your girlfriend, your best friend.

❤️‍🩹 someone may abuse you because they’re unable to control their own mental health issues, and their inner torment/reactivity spills out onto whoever is nearby

❤️‍🩹 someone may abuse you because they were abused as a child, and they didn’t do the work to stop the cycle so it’s all they know

❤️‍🩹 someone may abuse you because they feel sick inside, and it’s easier to put that onto you instead of owning up to the hard work of healing

there are a lot of reasons. none of them valid - there is NO excuse for abuse, ever.

but in my experience, understanding why the abuse took place helped in my healing.

signs of emotional abuse might include:

⚠️ criticism and belittling

➡️ criticizing your appearance, behavior, choices, etc both (either when you’re alone or in front of others)

➡️ using insults or name calling

➡️ convincing you that nothing you can do, say, be, etc is good enough for them

⚠️ isolation

➡️ discouraging you from spending time with others

➡️ forbidding you from seeing those you care about

➡️ separating you from your friends or family

➡️ making you feel like they’re the only person who could ever care for you or want you

⚠️ threats and intimidation

➡️ threatening to harm you or someone you love

➡️ threatening to harm themselves

➡️ blackmail

➡️ any threats or aggressive statements that make you afraid to leave them

⚠️ blaming and shaming

➡️ saying you deserve to be treated badly

➡️ making your behavior the reason for the abuse

➡️ saying if you were just “x” way they wouldn’t be this way (abusive)

➡️ shaming you for feelings you have about the abuse

⚠️ extreme mood swings

➡️ like swinging from kindness to rage at a moments notice

➡️ being easily “set off” into abusive tendencies

➡️ being emotionally unstable and reactive

➡️ unpredictable emotional rollercoasters

emotional abuse is NOT your fault 🫂 if you want to talk at all, my dm’s are always open 💛

... Read moreHey everyone, building on what was shared about recognizing emotional abuse, I wanted to dive a bit deeper into some aspects that often get overlooked or misunderstood. It's so common to feel confused, overwhelmed, and even blame ourselves, especially when we're experiencing what many might describe as 'emotional overload' – that constant feeling of being utterly drained, anxious, and emotionally exhausted. Often, this profound overload isn't just internal stress; it's a direct, painful symptom of being trapped in an emotionally abusive situation. When we discuss the core 5 SIGNS OF emotional abuse – which include blatant criticism & belittling, manipulative isolation tactics, terrifying threats & intimidation, unfair blaming & shaming, and chaotic extreme mood swings – it’s crucial to understand the profound psychological impact they have. For instance, relentless criticism doesn’t just sting; it systematically erodes your self-worth, making you question your intelligence, appearance, and fundamental value. This constant barrage leaves you in a state of emotional paralysis and self-doubt, a classic manifestation of being emotionally overloaded. Similarly, isolation tactics leave you feeling alone and vulnerable, amplifying any fear or anxiety you might already be experiencing. To address those of you searching for 'what are the 7 signs of emotional abuse,' let’s expand on the critical dimensions of this insidious behavior. Beyond the five powerful indicators already discussed, two more often surface as defining characteristics, significantly contributing to that unbearable feeling of 'emotional overload': 6. Gaslighting: Systematically Distorting Your Reality This is arguably one of the most insidious forms of emotional abuse because it attacks your very perception of reality. Your abuser will deny things they explicitly said or did, twist your words, or make you question your own memory and sanity. They might declare, 'That never happened, you're imagining things,' or 'You're being overly dramatic and sensitive,' even when you have clear recollections of events. This relentless psychological manipulation leaves you feeling disoriented, confused, and constantly questioning your judgment. It's an immense source of emotional strain, creating a profound 'emotional overload' of self-doubt and mental fog, making it incredibly difficult to trust your own instincts or make clear decisions. You might start to believe that you are, indeed, 'crazy.' 7. Pervasive Control and Coercion While isolation tactics focus on severing your external connections, pervasive control goes much further, aiming to dominate almost every aspect of your life. This might manifest as dictating what you wear, who you can communicate with (even family members), how you spend your money, or even monitoring your phone, emails, and social media. It's about stripping away your autonomy, independence, and personal boundaries, leaving you feeling utterly trapped and powerless. This constant invasion of privacy, coupled with the pressure to conform to their arbitrary demands, creates an intense, suffocating environment of chronic stress and anxiety. Such an existence inevitably leads to severe emotional exhaustion and an overwhelming sense of 'emotional overload,' as you're perpetually walking on eggshells, trying to anticipate their next demand to avoid conflict or punishment. These additional layers of abuse, particularly gaslighting and pervasive control, don't just exist in isolation; they intertwine with the initial 5 SIGNS OF emotional abuse to form a suffocating, disorienting reality. They relentlessly push your emotional capacity to its absolute limit, leaving you feeling constantly depleted and unable to cope. If you find yourself feeling perpetually drained, anxious, confused, or like you’re steadily losing your sense of self, it’s vital to recognize that this isn't merely 'emotional overload.' It could be a powerful internal signal, screaming that you are experiencing the profound impact of emotional abuse. Remember, recognizing and acknowledging such a situation takes incredible courage. It is never, ever your fault, and identifying these destructive patterns is the most powerful and courageous step you can take towards reclaiming your peace, your well-being, and your authentic self. You absolutely deserve a life free from any form of abuse, and support is available.
