As Black parents, our children’s hair deserves the same consistency we give every other part of their care. Also, healthy hair isn’t about finding one magical product. It’s about showing up consistently. Wash day, moisturizing, protecting their hair at night, being gentle, and understanding that healthy hair is built over time, not overnight. One day they’ll remember more than just how their hair looked. They’ll remember how you cared for them🫶🏾(and if they say you didn’t care, chakam the hair now so you go get evidence!!).

Save this for your next wash day, and share it with a parent who needs the reminder.

• What’s one hair care habit that made the biggest difference for your child?

... Read moreIn my experience caring for my child's natural hair, the key to healthy growth and manageable curls truly lies in consistency and gentle care. Just like the article suggests, applying a routine that includes hydrating daily with water and leave-in conditioners has made a huge difference in keeping my child's hair soft and strong. We also make deep conditioning part of our weekly wash day, and I can't stress enough how important it is to avoid over-washing since it tends to strip essential oils and dry out the hair. For product choices, I started with the same trusted line early on, much like Aunt Jackie's Shampoo and Conditioner, which have gentle formulas perfect for delicate hair. Mixing natural oils like coconut, shea butter, and essential oils like rosemary has been wonderful for sealing in moisture—this homemade blend nourishes the scalp and helps maintain curl definition. It's also crucial to be mindful of protective hairstyles. Avoiding tight styles such as slicked-back or all-back looks helps prevent tension and breakage around the hairline, which is a common concern for Black children's hair. Instead, opting for loose braids, twists, or simply embracing the natural fro allows the hair to breathe and reduces damage. Lastly, the mindset around hair care plays a monumental role. I always speak positively about my child's hair and gently teach her to appreciate and care for it. This normalizes the maintenance and helps build a lifelong habit of self-care without frustration or negativity. Consistency paired with gentle, loving care over time definitely wins the day when it comes to nurturing natural hair in Black children.

Parents night out
Tonight I had the pleasure of being a part of an hour an half long self defense class to donate money to a woman’s community club. They gave out this at the end as a thankyou for being apart of the charity.🥰 #karate #selfdefense #women #fundraiser #benefit #charity #donation #2024

Obviously we’re not a monolith, but I do deem these specific things are universal to most Black families and I just had to remove myself from certain things! #blackgirllemon8 #blackculture #girlgrowth #lemon8challenge

A cartoon depicts a black family with a present father in the 1960s, contrasted with a single mother and child in 2025, illustrating the shift in family structure over time.
A comic strip shows a man expressing concern about the increased absence of black fathers in 2025 compared to the 1960s, speculating on economic or governmental causes.
Text on a lined paper background details the prevalence of single-parent households with absent fathers among black youth, comparing statistics from the 1960s to 2023/2025.
The dark history behind single-parent households
In the 1960s, two-parent households, particularly in predominantly black families, were the norm. Fathers would be home, providing for their wives and children, and then return to spend time with their families. This meant being actively involved in their children’s lives. Marriage rates were high,
