What to bring for the Reed Lakes Trail Hike in Alaska

Reed Lakes Trailhead

1. Sunscreen – The sun will hit one side of your face on the way up and the other on the way down. With Alaska’s summer sunshine, don’t take any chances—protect your skin!

2. Snacks – This is a full-day hike, and you will get hungry. Pack enough fuel to keep you going.

3. Swimsuit – If you’re up for a polar plunge, bring one! The water at the top is freezing, but it’s a refreshing (and brag-worthy) experience.

4. Sturdy, water-friendly shoes – You’ll need shoes with good grip for climbing and ones you don’t mind getting wet when crossing streams along the trail.

5. Bear spray/bear protection — This is a well groomed trail with lots of people but you can never be too careful. Make noise or add bells to your backpacks.

✨Pro tip: Hike on a sunny day for the best experience—the views are unbeatable!

... Read moreThe Reed Lakes Trail is one of Alaska's most picturesque hikes, renowned for its stunning views and diverse terrain. Covering about 4.3 miles, this trail offers a rich experience from babbling creeks to the majestic waterfall that marks the end of the hike. As you embark on this adventure, you'll encounter beautiful pathways and boulder sections that challenge your balance and provide a fun bouldering experience, especially around the 3-mile mark. This hike is not only about reaching the destination but also about engaging with the uniquely rugged beauty of Alaska's natural landscape. For those considering a polar plunge at the top, remember that the waters can be frigid, so it's best to prepare for both exhilaration and a shock from the cold! Furthermore, incorporating bear safety measures, like carrying bear spray and making noise while hiking, can greatly enhance your peace of mind on the trail. Always stay vigilant, especially in the wildlife-rich Alaskan wilderness. Lastly, aim to hike on clear days to take advantage of the breathtaking vistas. The views, particularly of the two stunning lakes, are truly unforgettable and should not be missed!
