Testimony of a D.V. Survivor

The first picture I could have swore that I was happy, but really, my light was dimmed. I was just used to the trauma and abuse that came with everyday life. I became numb to what I know is acceptable. I had forgot what boundaries were, the second picture is from this last weekend my light is back and shining brighter than ever!Iif you're seeing this post, this is my reminder to you that self care is not selfish, prioritizing yourself and your safety does not make you an evil person, and absolutely does not make you heartless! It makes you a brave warrior! Coming from someone who lost everything and started completely over; the joy, happiness, and warmth I feel today was worth every single hard step that I've had to take to get here! If you need a sign of encouragement from me to you, here it is!

... Read moreDomestic violence (D.V.) is a pervasive issue affecting millions worldwide, often leaving survivors feeling powerless and emotionally numb, as described in the testimony. Healing from such trauma involves recognizing abuse patterns, establishing personal boundaries, and prioritizing self-care—which are essential steps in recovery and regaining control over one’s life. Survivors often face significant challenges beyond the abuse itself, including emotional scars, loss of support systems, and rebuilding their sense of identity. Support networks such as community resources, counseling, and survivor groups play a critical role in this journey by providing guidance and understanding. Self-care is frequently misunderstood but is vital for survivors; it is not selfish but a courageous act of protecting one’s mental and physical health. Activities like therapy, engaging with supportive communities (e.g., #girlgrowth), and participating in challenges that promote empowerment (e.g., #lemon8challenge) can foster resilience and inspire hope. Recovery is a gradual process, and each survivor’s path is unique. It often involves reclaiming joy and light in life, as the author shares—moving from numbness and trauma to renewed brightness and happiness. Public testimonies like this help reduce stigma, raise awareness, and encourage others to seek help and believe in their capacity for transformation. For those supporting survivors, understanding the complexity of domestic violence and offering compassionate, consistent support can make a profound difference. Encouraging survivors to prioritize their safety and well-being affirms their bravery and humanity. Rebuilding a life after domestic violence is challenging but possible, with each step forward representing remarkable strength and hope.
