MOM HACK | How to Save A Short Nap

It happens every time. You finally feel like your baby is on a stable nap schedule, sleeping at least an hour or two per nap. Then suddenly one day, their naps are only 30 minutes long, and you’re trying to adjust feedings and wake windows to also keep them on schedule for bed time.

Short naps can definitely be hard to keep up with if you have a lot to get done throughout the day. My daughter typically regressed during her developmental leap periods. When she goes through a week of short naps, I dedicate a little extra time to trying to save it. Here’s How!

SAVING A NAP IS EXTENDING A NAP

Your baby slept only 30 minutes, which means they’re having trouble connecting their sleep cycles and need some extra help. Here’s where you come in as super mama saving the day!

MAKE SURE THE ROOM IS COMFORTABLE

Check to make sure the sound machine is on, blackout curtains are fully covering the window, and the temperature of the room is neutral (between 68-72). These will all contribute to an ideal sleep environment for your baby.

CHECK ON BABY

Does their diaper need changed, or does their swaddle need to be adjusted? Ensure they aren’t too hot or cold.

SOOTHE BABY

Now that we’ve checked to make sure the room and the baby are comfortable, we can do the fun part of rocking and singing to your baby. Soothing your baby back to sleep is a great way to bond with them. If you practice sleep training, you can lay baby back down in their crib awake, and give some face rubs and head scratches.

Remember, newborns are too young to sleep train and WILL have short naps. Newborns may be waking up to feed often. I started trying to save and extend naps at the four month mark when my daughter’s feeding and sleep schedules became more fixated.

... Read moreDealing with those frustrating 30-minute baby naps in the crib can feel like a never-ending cycle, believe me, I've been there! It’s disheartening when you've just put your little one down, only for them to wake up seemingly minutes later. The original article gives fantastic tips on saving a short nap once it happens, but I want to dive a bit deeper into why these 30-minute naps are so common and what else you can do to encourage longer stretches of sleep, especially when your baby is in their crib. My experience taught me that understanding baby sleep cycles is key. A typical baby sleep cycle is indeed around 30-45 minutes. When your baby wakes up exactly after 30 minutes, it often means they've completed one full sleep cycle but haven't yet learned how to seamlessly transition into the next. This is a learned skill! For some babies, the slight shift in environment or feeling when they move from deep to light sleep is enough to fully wake them. This is where creating the ideal sleep environment in the crib, as mentioned in the original article, becomes even more critical. Think about minimizing any external disruptions that could jar them awake during this transition. Beyond saving a nap, I found that being proactive with a few strategies really helped my baby connect those sleep cycles in her crib. One of the biggest game-changers for me was really nailing the wake window. Putting your baby down for a nap when they’re perfectly tired – not overtired and not undertired – makes a huge difference. An overtired baby might struggle to fall asleep and stay asleep, while an undertired baby won't be sleepy enough to settle for a long nap. It took some trial and error, but tracking her wake windows helped me understand her natural rhythm better. Another crucial step I implemented was a consistent, calming pre-nap routine. Even just 5-10 minutes of quiet time – a quick diaper check (making sure she wasn't uncomfortable), reading a short book, or a gentle lullaby – signaled to her brain that sleep was coming. This routine, combined with putting her down in her crib drowsy but awake, really encouraged her to practice those self-soothing skills. If she woke up after 30 minutes, I’d initially try the soothing methods from the main article, but teaching her to fall asleep independently in her crib was essential for those longer naps, eventually helping her turn a 30-minute nap into 2 hours, as the picture suggests. What if all your efforts still result in a 30-minute nap? Don't despair! I've learned that sometimes, despite our best efforts, a nap just can't be saved. On those days, instead of fighting it, I'd often accept the short nap and focus on adjusting the rest of the day. This might mean an earlier bedtime to prevent overtiredness, or sometimes, an extra contact nap later in the day if I felt she genuinely needed more rest. Remember, consistency is important, but so is flexibility. Every baby is different, and what works one week might need tweaking the next, especially during developmental leaps. Patience and persistence are your best friends in navigating these short nap phases. You're doing great, mama!
