Few tips I wish I knew earlier about baby’s sleep

2025/10/1 Edited to

... Read moreOkay, fellow parents, let's talk about baby sleep – the holy grail! I remember those early days, constantly searching for answers, feeling like I was doing something wrong. These tips truly changed our sleep journey, and I want to share more details, especially since many of you are looking for specific advice on things like 'drowsy but awake' and how to handle those tricky night wakings. Mastering 'Drowsy But Awake' – It's a Game Changer! This is probably the most impactful tip for independent sleep. The idea is to put your baby down in their crib when they are showing signs of drowsiness (yawning, rubbing eyes, zoning out) but before they're actually asleep. This teaches them to self-soothe and drift off on their own. For us, this meant a consistent bedtime routine – bath, feeding, book, then into the sleep sack. I'd hold my little one until their eyes were heavy, but still open, and then gently place them in the crib. There will be some fussing initially, and that's okay. A gentle pat or shush can help, but the goal is to avoid rocking them completely to sleep. If your baby is used to being rocked, this transition can be tough, but it's worth it for long-term sleep skills. It directly addresses the query of "putting baby in crib drowsy but awake." Gentle Sleep Cues & Environment: Creating the right environment makes a huge difference. Think 'gentle sleep cues' – consistent signals that tell your baby it's time to wind down. For us, this meant dimming the lights about 30 minutes before bedtime and using a white noise machine. The white noise helped block out household sounds and created a womb-like environment. We kept the nursery cool and dark. These simple cues, consistently applied, became powerful signals for sleep. Consistency with Night Wakings: This is where many parents, including myself, initially struggle. When your baby wakes up at night (especially around 5 months, when sleep regressions can hit!), it's tempting to immediately pick them up. But consistency is key. We tried to pause for a few minutes to see if they would resettle. If not, I'd go in, offer a quick comfort (a pat or a few soothing words), ensure they weren't hungry or needing a diaper change, and then put them back down. Avoiding prolonged rocking or feeding during these wakings helped them learn that night is for sleeping, not playing or eating a full meal. This approach was crucial for us when our baby was around "5 month old baby sleeping in crib." Ensuring Full Feedings (and My Milk Supply Journey): I quickly learned that a well-fed baby sleeps better. Ensuring "full feedings" during the day meant they weren't waking up from hunger at night. This was a challenge for me as I struggled with my milk supply early on. I remember my lactation consultant suggesting ways to boost supply. She mentioned supplementing with Moringa, and I decided to try it. I found a brand, Pura Vida 100% Pure Moringa Leaf Powder Capsules, that I trusted, and it honestly made a noticeable difference for me. It helped me feel confident that my baby was getting enough, which in turn contributed to longer stretches of sleep. It also helped with the dreaded postpartum hair loss, a bonus! I know many of you are searching for tips on "milk supply" and how it relates to baby sleep, and this was a personal breakthrough for me. Remember, every baby is different, and what works for one might not work for another. Be patient with yourself and your little one. The goal isn't perfection, but progress towards more restful nights for everyone. You've got this!
