Combed out my locs 🙆🏽‍♀️

2024/12/31 Edited to

... Read moreSo, after years of embracing my beautiful locs, I finally made the big decision to comb them out. It was a journey I never thought I'd embark on, but here I am, ready to share my ‘before and after’ with you all! For context, my locs were a significant part of my identity and styling routine for quite a while. I loved the low maintenance, the unique look, and the way they symbolized my natural hair journey. However, lately, I found myself craving more versatility. I wanted to experiment with different styles, see my loose curls again, and simply experience my hair in a new way. That's when the idea of combing them out really started to take root. Let me tell you, combing out locs is NOT for the faint of heart! It was a marathon, not a sprint. I broke it down into sections, armed myself with plenty of conditioner, water in a spray bottle, a rat-tail comb, and a whole lot of patience. Each loc felt like an individual project. I started from the ends, gently working my way up, detangling small sections at a time. It took me a full weekend, maybe even longer, working in chunks. My fingers were sore, my arms tired, but the anticipation of seeing my natural hair again kept me going. My biggest tip for anyone considering this? Keep your hair saturated with a good slip-inducing conditioner throughout the process. Don't pull, just gently unravel. And be prepared for a lot of shed hair – it’s completely normal! That’s all the hair you would have shed naturally over the years, finally coming out. Don't panic when you see it; it’s a natural part of the process. Finally seeing my hair free was such an emotional moment! It felt so light, so soft, so *different*. My first impression was, "Wow, it's so long!" but also, "Wow, it's so much finer than I remembered!" It's important to understand that your hair might be delicate and a bit fragile right after. It needs a lot of Tender Loving Care (TLC). After combing them out, I immediately did a deep conditioning treatment. My hair was thirsty! I've been focusing on strengthening treatments, moisturizing, and gentle styling ever since. It’s a whole new learning curve to manage my loose natural hair again, finding new products and routines, but I’m absolutely loving the versatility – braids, twists, wash-and-gos! It feels like a fresh start. This entire process, from making the decision to the final wash-and-go, has been incredibly liberating. It’s a reminder that hair journeys are personal and constantly evolving. If you’re thinking about combing out your locs, know that it’s an undertaking, but the feeling of rediscovering your natural hair is absolutely worth it.
