Konky explains metacognition 🧠

Metacognition sounds fancy.

But it’s really just noticing how your brain is moving.

ADHD brains don’t lack awareness - they just don’t get it on demand.

And that’s not a failure. It’s a different rhythm.

... Read moreFrom my own experience living with ADHD, I’ve found that understanding metacognition—the ability to notice and monitor your own thinking—is a game changer for managing daily challenges. Unlike typical brains that can switch into awareness instantly, ADHD brains often experience this 'observer' effect later, sometimes after hours have passed or an emotion has already been felt. This delay isn’t a flaw but a different rhythm that requires adapting strategies rather than forcing self-control. One powerful technique I use is setting up external reminders through alarms or sticky notes, which act as visual cues anchoring my attention in the moment. For example, placing a bright-colored note near my workspace helps interrupt hyperfocus episodes gently, prompting me to pause and check in with myself. Similarly, taking scheduled pause moments throughout the day allows me to step back and assess my mental state, reducing overwhelm and improving productivity. Another helpful practice is kindness checks—reminding myself that delayed awareness is normal and embracing it without shame. This mindset shift can transform how we relate to our mental processes, moving from frustration to curiosity and acceptance. The key takeaway is to shift the question from "Why didn’t I notice sooner?" to "What tools help me notice sooner?" This empowers rather than punishes, tapping into the brain’s natural flow and making metacognitive awareness a supportive ally rather than a source of anxiety. By embracing this approach, I’ve improved not only how I work but also how I understand my emotions and reactions, leading to greater self-compassion and effective productivity tailored to my ADHD brain.
