When we travel abroad, the little thing that should not be overlooked is "how to say hello," because each society has different customs and meanings; some countries use worship; some countries bow; some countries shake hands; or some cultures have a touch of the cheek to show familiarity.
🇮🇳 India: "Muste" style.
🇯🇵 Japan: Bow to Show Politeness
🇹🇭 Thailand: Wai Wai is unique to Thai culture.
🇳🇿 New Zealand: Maori have the custom of "Hongi."
🇫🇷 France: Greetings with a Cheek Kiss, or La Bise in Some Contexts
🇮🇹 Italy / 🇪🇸 Spain: Cheek kissing may be found in greetings between familiar people.
🇦🇷 Argentina: Often greeted by kissing one cheek in some contexts.
🇨🇳 China: A little handshake or nod.
🇰🇷 South Korea: Bowing and Shaking Hands
🇵🇭 Philippines: Handshakes, and the "Manu" custom to pay homage to adults
🇺🇸 US / 🇬🇧 UK / 🇦🇺 Australia: The handshake is a common pattern.
⚠️ But there are important things to remember. These customs are just the big picture. It doesn't always mean that everyone in that country greets the same thing, because age, relationships, place, religion, and social context all affect how they greet.
💡 Before traveling to a country, study the basic manners of that country a little, because the correct greeting not only makes us polite, but also shows respect for the host's culture.
