My boyfriend gave me the sweetest proposal 🥺 every single word out of his mouth was perfect (and I’m the type to cry at commercials) so I was so confused at myself when I didn’t cry lol
I feel like there’s such an expectation to!!
But I was just so enamored with everything he was saying and trying to memorize the moment as it was happening - I didn’t cry about it till days after 😅
... Read moreHey everyone! Following up on my post about not shedding a tear when my amazing boyfriend proposed – I’ve been thinking so much about it, especially after seeing some of your comments and thinking about what we 'expect' from such a big moment. It really made me dive into the whole 'why do women cry when they get proposed to?' question.
There's definitely this huge societal expectation, isn't there? We see it in movies, on social media, even in real-life stories from friends – the overwhelming tears of joy, the immediate emotional outburst. And honestly, for a long time, I thought that's exactly how I’d react. I’m usually the type to cry at commercials, so when he got down on one knee in that beautiful gazebo, surrounded by 'MARRY ME' lights and rose petals, and our engagement ring sparkling, I was genuinely surprised by my own lack of tears.
But as I reflected, I realized my emotions were just manifesting differently. Instead of tears, I felt a deep, overwhelming sense of presence. I was so completely in the moment, trying to memorize every word he said, every detail of the beautiful setup he'd planned. It was pure shock, pure joy, pure adoration, all combining into this intense feeling of being utterly present. My heart was pounding, I was smiling from ear to ear, and I just wanted to soak it all in. I think for me, the instant emotional processing was less about immediate tears and more about complete absorption.
It’s made me think about why some people do cry. For many, it’s the culmination of a dream, the relief, the overwhelming joy, or even a sense of validation. It's a powerful moment, and tears are a natural, beautiful response for so many. But it’s equally natural and beautiful to have a different reaction. The pressure to 'make it look like I cried' or to have a 'perfect' tearful reaction is something I think a lot of us feel, even subconsciously. But what truly matters is the genuine emotion you felt, whatever form it took.
For me, the tears came a few days later, unexpectedly, when I was just looking at my beautiful oval-cut diamond engagement ring on my hand, resting on my chest, or even just on my leg in my blue jeans. It was a quiet moment of reflection, and suddenly, all the built-up emotion, the realization of what had happened, just poured out. It felt incredibly cathartic and authentic to my experience.
So, if you didn't cry when your partner proposed, please know you’re absolutely not alone, and there's nothing 'wrong' with your reaction. Your proposal moment is uniquely yours, and your feelings are valid. Whether it's immediate tears, silent shock, overwhelming laughter, or delayed emotional release – it's all part of your beautiful love story. What was your emotional reaction like during your proposal?
Nope, I kept asking him if he was “serious and sure”😂😂😂 I was in shock thats for sure. Speechless otherwise lmao
