Why we don’t have kids at 36

Brian and I have been together since we were 15, just a little over 20 years and married for 13.

We used to always get asked “Why don’t you have kids?” And I used to absolutely hate that question.

As years have passed and trying for so long, it just never happened.

As I spend more time with God and leaned into him, He has give me unexplainable peace with not having kids.

Here is how it use to make me feel, how I feel now and how I respond to people who ask.

•WHY we don’t have kids:

The honest answer, we don’t know why. It’s not a light switch that we can turn on and off. We can’t decide whether we’re having them or not. We’ve tried our whole marriage and it just never happened.

Personally we don’t want to invest in getting tested. It’s just not a financial priority for us and the last thing we want to do is put ourselves in a financial crisis for something that may or may not happen. Which ultimately could lead to more stress, anxiety and mental fatigue.

•How it USE to make me feel:

It use to make me feel terrible when people would ask why we don’t have kids. I use to feel extremely depressed and embarrassed.

•How it makes me feel NOW:

Confident - As I spend more time with God, he gives me true peace with not having kids.

I feel secure in knowing his plan is better than ours. Life with my husband is satisfying and I wouldn’t change anything about it.

•How I RESPOND:

I started telling people we don’t think can have kids. And the look on their face is complete shock.

Sometimes people aren’t aware of other couples struggles. It’s not always as easy as “trying” when you think you’re ready and just getting pregnant.

But I always follow up with how confident I am in God and his plan for us, with or without kids. Right now, we’re just enjoying life with each other and we’re loving it. Truly blessed.

... Read moreThe journey to embracing a childfree life, whether by choice or circumstance, is deeply personal and often misunderstood. For many, the idea of 'choosing to be child free' implies a simple decision, but the reality can be far more nuanced. My own path, for instance, wasn't a straightforward choice, but rather an acceptance of a destiny that unfolded differently than expected. Yet, the act of choosing peace, joy, and purpose within this life is a powerful one, and it’s something I want to share more about. Societal expectations can weigh heavily on us, leading to moments where you might feel depressed and embarrassed, just as I once did. The constant questions, the well-meaning but often hurtful comments, can make you feel like you're somehow 'less than.' But what I've learned is that owning your narrative, whatever it may be, is the key to finding confidence and at peace. It's about redefining what a fulfilling life looks like for *you*, rather than adhering to traditional blueprints. Part of this journey for us involved facing difficult decisions, like the choice not to pursue extensive fertility testing. This wasn't taken lightly; it was a conscious decision rooted in prioritizing our financial and mental well-being. The potential for financial crisis and the immense emotional stress often associated with fertility treatments were factors we weighed carefully. For many who consciously choose a childfree life, financial freedom and avoiding the immense costs of raising children are significant considerations. While our circumstances differed, the outcome – a focus on our present life – aligns with some of those childfree ideals. Finding satisfaction in life with your husband and even our beloved dogs has become an unexpected joy. Our home is filled with love, laughter, and a sense of calm that might have been different had our lives followed another course. We've poured our energy into our relationship, our passions, and building a life rich with experiences. This is where the 'choosing' truly comes in – actively choosing to find happiness and meaning in every day, regardless of whether children are part of it. It’s about discovering that your definition of 'family' can be broad and deeply rewarding. Ultimately, my confidence in God's plan has been my anchor. It has allowed me to let go of the 'what ifs' and truly embrace the 'what is.' For anyone navigating a similar path, whether by active choice or through unforeseen circumstances, remember that your worth is not defined by parenthood. You have the power to choose how you live, how you respond to others, and how you find profound peace and satisfaction in the life you're creating. It’s a continuous journey of self-discovery, acceptance, and building a life that truly reflects your deepest desires and brings you joy.

I feel the same way. Even if I am not with a person. I have been asked if I ever have kids. Cause I honestly I don’t have kids. I feel it’s not the world’s business to see if you and everyone is going to have kids.
