How much I spent on my group trip to Cartagena

If you are planning on visiting the beautiful Caribbean Coast of Colombia - Cartagena then here is a breakdown of how much I spent during my group trip last year.

🏨 Hotel:

We stayed at 3 bedroom apartment at theSonesta Hotel Cartagena located just north of the historic City. This apartment had access to all of the Hotel’s Amenities such as the pools, gym and beach access. We stayed a total of 5 nights and the total cost of $914 was split amongst 5 of us bringing my individual total to $182

🏝️Excursions:

You cannot visit the Caribbean coast of Colombia without checking out its beautiful beaches. During our trip we took a boat tour to the Rosario Islands and spent a day at a Luxury Beach Club where we relaxed, swam and snorkeled. The total cost of these excursions were $135

🌮 Food:

Colombia has some of the best food I’ve had in the world and we did not hold back while dining in Cartagena. We visiting breakfast and brunch spots such as Epoca and dined at fine restaurants such as Mar y Zielo and Cande. While exploring the streets in the historic city we snacked on delicious foods such as empanadas and arepas. The total cost of food spent when split between the group of 5 was $175

🚕 Taxis

One of the easiest ways to get around Cartagena is by local taxis. Lucky for us there were taxis available right outside our hotel and were always easily accessible no matter where we were in the city. After 6 days in Cartagena we spent a total of $120 which was split between the 5 of us. Therefore I spent $24 in taxis during my stay.

The grand total spent during my group trip to Cartagena was $516 for 6 days

... Read moreWhile my detailed Cartagena cost breakdown hopefully gives you a great starting point, many of you might be thinking about the broader question: "how much is a trip to Colombia" in general? From my personal experience, budgeting for Colombia can be quite flexible, depending on where you go. Cartagena, being a popular tourist hub, has prices comparable to some other Caribbean destinations, especially for hotels and high-end dining. However, if you venture inland to cities like Medellín or Bogotá, you might find daily expenses for food and local transportation to be a bit more budget-friendly. My biggest tip for saving money across Colombia? Embrace local food! While we enjoyed delicious breakfast and brunch spots, you absolutely cannot beat the value and flavor of street food. Empanadas, arepas, and fresh fruit juices are not only incredibly tasty but also super affordable. Look out for local markets; they're a feast for the senses and a great place to sample authentic snacks and produce. Also, consider booking accommodations with kitchen access if you're traveling in a group to save on some meals. Regarding transportation, beyond just local taxis (which were super handy in Cartagena!), getting around Colombia offers a few options. For those curious about specific services or general taxi tips, in major cities, ride-sharing apps like Uber or InDriver are widely available and can provide fixed prices, which can be reassuring. When hailing a taxi on the street in Cartagena, always agree on the fare before you start your journey – this is a common practice. For shorter distances within Cartagena's charming, narrow streets and colorful buildings, walking is truly the best way to explore and soak in the vibrant atmosphere. If you're planning to visit multiple cities, look into domestic flights for efficiency or long-distance buses for a more scenic and economical option. For unique food experiences beyond just dining out, which might touch on what someone seeking "jet catering Cartagena" could be looking for in a broader sense of special group dining, consider a cooking class! It’s a fantastic way to immerse yourself in Colombian culture and learn to prepare traditional dishes. Many fine dining establishments in Cartagena also offer private rooms or special menus for groups, providing a more tailored culinary experience. Don't forget that enjoying a drink at a vibrant bar scene is also a key part of the experience, and many places have great happy hour deals. Finally, for anyone comparing Cartagena to other Caribbean destinations like "Barbados" or similar spots, I can tell you what makes Cartagena truly stand out. It's not just the beautiful turquoise water and boat tours to places like the Rosario Islands where you can relax by the pool under lush palm trees. It's the unique blend of rich history, stunning colonial architecture, and lively Afro-Caribbean culture. You get a vibrant, bustling city experience with incredible cultural depth alongside your beach relaxation. The city's energy, from its historic walled city to its modern resorts, offers a diverse travel experience that often provides excellent value for money compared to many other Caribbean islands.
