Then and Now (career edition)

#whenigrowup #dreamjob

As a kid I had always wanted to be either a musician, an artist, an author, and the very brief period of wanting to be a professional surfer (I grew up in Cali with Soul Surfer playing a lot). Now, I’m studying for my Bachelor of Arts in English with a minor in Art and have my Associates of Applied Science in Business & Marketing with a plan to join the publishing industry! It’s crazy how much time can change our plans in life isn’t it?

2025/10/27 Edited to

... Read moreReflecting on how our childhood dreams shape our career paths can be truly inspiring. Many of us experience a variety of dreams growing up—whether imagining life as a musician, artist, author, or even a professional surfer, like the brief period inspired by movies such as Soul Surfer. These early aspirations often provide a foundation for our adult ambitions. It's fascinating that childhood passions can influence what we choose to study and eventually the industry we enter. In this story, the transition from diverse creative interests to a focused academic pursuit in English and Art, paired with practical knowledge in Business and Marketing, creates a strong combination to thrive in the publishing industry. This path showcases how versatile skills and shifting interests can come together to build a meaningful career. For those navigating their own 'then and now' career timeline, it’s important to recognize that evolving goals are natural. Life’s experiences, educational opportunities, and changing circumstances shape what feels right at each stage. Leveraging a background that bridges creative expression and business savvy opens doors to dynamic roles within publishing—from content creation and editing to marketing and distribution. This journey also highlights the value of interdisciplinary learning. Studying humanities alongside applied sciences like business equips individuals with critical thinking, creativity, and strategic skills needed in today’s competitive career landscapes. It’s a reminder to embrace growth and remain open to new possibilities as your plans evolve. Ultimately, sharing personal stories about career evolution can motivate others to pursue their dreams with flexibility and resilience. Whether your childhood dream was to be an artist, musician, author, or something completely different, pursuing education and experiences that align with your passions can lead to fulfilling career opportunities. Remember, it’s never too late to redefine your goals and make your dreams a reality.
