Gym Breaks Are OKAY!🫶

Is the gym becoming more and more distant lately? Maybe you’re burnt out, sick, or even just losing motivation. Please trust when I say this, but I am in that boat right now, and you are not alone!🫶🏻

For the past two weeks, I have been dealing with sickness related to my chronic illness and also some illnesses that have been going around lately. These illnesses have caused me to miss two weeks worth of the gym. I have felt guilt, shame, and embarrassment about not being able to get back to what I normally do.

But lately, I have been thinking about the “why” factor. Why do I feel so guilty and ashamed that I’m not going to the gym? I’m literally sick in a bed and I’m feeling guilty about not working out. I think I speak for a lot of us when I say this statement, but it just seems so silly, right? Me being sick in a bed with a fever, cough, and barely being able to breathe, yet I’m still worrying about going to the gym.

I am here to tell you today that breaks are OK. If you’re feeling burnt out, take that break. Your brain may need it.

If you’re feeling sick, take a break. Your body is sending you signs that you need one.

If you’re being thrown off routine, take a break. You could always come back when your routine is fixed and solid.

Never feel ashamed for needing rest. Your body and your mind send you signs all the time that this is necessary. Listen to yourself, be kind to yourself, and never doubt yourself.🫶🏻

... Read moreOkay, so we've talked about why it's essential to take those gym breaks – I've definitely been there, feeling the guilt! But what does a great rest day for muscle recovery actually look like? When I first started, I wished I had an 'infographic' to guide me. Over time, through my own "physical well-being challenges" and "life interruptions," I've figured out a few things that really help. First, let's remember why rest days are non-negotiable. It’s not just about lying on the couch (though that’s great too!). Your muscles actually repair and grow outside the gym. This is when your body rebuilds tiny tears in muscle fibers, replenishes energy stores, and reduces inflammation. Without this crucial time, you risk overtraining, injury, and severe 'burnout'. For me, there are two main types of rest days. Sometimes, it's a complete passive rest day – think cozying up with a book or just chilling. Perfect when I'm feeling sick or truly exhausted. Other times, it's an *active recovery day*. This could be a gentle walk, some stretching, yoga, or foam rolling. It helps with blood flow to aid recovery without adding stress. Learning to "reflect on routines" and decide which type of rest I need has been a game-changer. Maximizing Your Rest Day for Recovery: Prioritize Sleep: This is HUGE. Aim for 7-9 hours. It’s when your body does most of its repair work. I notice a massive difference in my energy and muscle soreness when I get quality sleep. Fuel Your Body Right: Don't slack on nutrition just because you're not lifting. Focus on protein for muscle repair, complex carbs for energy, and plenty of fruits and veggies for vitamins and anti-inflammatory benefits. I love making a nourishing smoothie on my rest days! Stay Hydrated: Water is vital for every bodily function, including muscle repair and nutrient transport. Keep a water bottle handy throughout the day. Gentle Movement (if active recovery): As I mentioned, light activities like walking or stretching can improve circulation and reduce stiffness. Just make sure it’s genuinely low-intensity. Listen to Your Body (Again!): This is the most critical piece of advice. If you're stressed, sick, or feeling pain, a passive rest day might be exactly what you need. Don't push it. I've learned the hard way that ignoring these signs only leads to longer setbacks. When 'life interruptions' throw off your gym schedule, or you face 'physical well-being challenges' like I did, remember that consistency doesn't mean perfection. It means showing up for yourself in whatever way you can, even if that's resting. Don't let the guilt win. Use these times to "reflect on routines" and maybe even find new ways to incorporate movement or self-care that aren't gym-dependent. Taking a break isn't giving up; it's smart training. Your body (and mind!) will thank you. Remember, 'Breaks Are OKAY!' – truly.
