3 things I wish I knew before going to Korea

When I was planning my trip to South Korea, I didn’t realize how important having the right phone service would be until I arrived. I had T-Mobile but didn’t get the international plan, hoping Wi-Fi would be enough. While there’s plenty of free Wi-Fi at cafes and stores, I found the overall internet connection spotty. If I could do it again, I would definitely get a local SIM or portable Wi-Fi to stay fully connected, especially for navigation and communication. Another thing I wish I knew before going was how helpful the Naver Papago app can be for translation. I tried Google Translate at first, but Papago offered much more accurate Korean translations—it really helped me get by when reading menus or signs. Navigating the subway system can be tricky, especially on Line 2 with all its stops. I made the mistake of choosing accommodations without fully understanding the subway layout. For future travelers, I recommend staying near major subway hubs like Hongik University, Gangnam, or Myeongdong where it's easier to get around quickly. Lastly, don’t underestimate the power of locals’ advice! I found it super helpful to ask for recommendations and tips on social media and from locals I met. It gave me insider knowledge on places to visit and small travel hacks that made my journey smoother. Traveling to South Korea is an amazing experience, and being prepared with these little tips can really enhance your visit.
