Servant Leadership Day 2 🌸

Servant leadership is often framed as supporting and empowering others.

And that part is true.

But support without authority creates a gap that someone has to fill.

And a lot of the time… it falls on the person trying to lead well.

You can influence change without authority.

But you can’t sustain it on your own.

Over time, that turns into extra work, unspoken responsibility, and eventually burnout.

Real leadership requires both support and structure.

... Read moreFrom my experience working in team leadership roles, I've seen firsthand how servant leadership, while rooted in empowering others, can become challenging without clear authority. Often, leaders who aim to serve end up carrying the weight of unspoken responsibilities simply because they lack the formal power to enact decisions. This creates a gap where the leader must constantly fill in to keep the team functioning smoothly, which over time leads to exhaustion. One key lesson I learned is that influence alone isn't enough to sustain team progress. Without the backing that authority provides, support risks becoming extra work with no structural foundation. In practical terms, this means that servant leaders must advocate for both empowerment and the ability to make binding decisions. It is this combination that fosters a healthy workplace culture and prevents burnout. Moreover, organizations should recognize that supporting servant leadership means establishing clear frameworks where these leaders can operate effectively. This reduces the risk of informal burdens falling exclusively on individuals and ensures leadership is a shared, structured effort. By bridging support and structure, servant leadership can truly drive meaningful and lasting change within teams.
