A lot of adults can tell the difference between authority and emotionally intelligent leadership. 🌺

One creates tension.

The other creates trust.

Emotionally intelligent leaders understand that people do not perform their best when they feel constantly intimidated, dismissed, or emotionally on edge.

They create environments where communication feels safe, feedback feels constructive, and growth feels possible.

And over time, those environments change how people participate, learn, collaborate, and lead themselves.

Leadership is not just about managing tasks.

It is also about managing the emotional climate people work within every day.

5/17 Edited to

... Read moreIn my own experience working under different leadership styles, the contrast between authoritative and emotionally intelligent leaders became very clear. Leaders who rely on authority often create an atmosphere of tension, where team members feel hesitant to voice concerns or offer innovative ideas. On the other hand, emotionally intelligent leaders foster trust by genuinely listening without defensiveness, which aligns with the qualities noted in the leadership traits such as active listening and consistent communication. One particular practice that stood out to me was how emotionally intelligent leaders handle feedback. Instead of issuing criticisms that humiliate or intimidate, they deliver constructive feedback that feels like an opportunity for growth. This approach not only reduces stress but encourages ongoing learning and collaboration among teams. Over time, these positive emotional environments transform workplace culture, making it more inclusive and supportive. Moreover, emotionally intelligent leaders recognize and regulate their own emotions, which sets a tone of stability and clarity. This is crucial, as people generally perform better when the emotional climate is calm and respectful rather than unpredictable or charged with negativity. The emotional intelligence in leadership also includes acknowledging and respecting individual perspectives, which avoids defensiveness and fosters openness. From my perspective, the biggest takeaway is that leadership extends far beyond task management—it deeply involves cultivating an emotional climate where all individuals feel valued and capable of leading themselves. This more human-centered approach not only enhances engagement but significantly improves overall performance and well-being.
