One thing I learned from unhealthy workplaces:

Some people become uncomfortable when they cannot emotionally control you.

If you stay calm,

measured,

and emotionally regulated,

they start struggling to “read” you.

And in environments built on pressure, fear, optics, or intimidation…

that calmness can accidentally threaten people who rely on emotional reactions to feel powerful.

Not every calm person is disengaged.

Sometimes they are just grounded.

... Read moreFrom my own experience working in various organizational settings, I've noticed that calmness in the face of workplace chaos isn't just a personal trait—it's a strategic asset. Unhealthy workplaces often thrive on emotional volatility; managers and colleagues may use pressure tactics or intimidation to assert control. I found that maintaining a calm and measured demeanor not only helped me stay focused but also disrupted the typical power plays based on emotional reactions. In particular, being less reactive to high-pressure situations makes it harder for others to manipulate or read you, which can unsettle those who depend on such dynamics to feel influential. I've seen colleagues who rely on creating stress or using fear to push agendas become visibly uncomfortable when met with steady calmness. It's important to recognize that calmness doesn't equate to disengagement. Often, calm individuals are deeply grounded and observant, choosing to respond thoughtfully rather than impulsively. This clarity allows them to focus on reality rather than superficial optics, which is essential in unraveling dysfunctional patterns at work. Furthermore, practicing emotional intelligence by regulating our responses can protect our mental health and promote a healthier professional environment. While it may draw tension in toxic cultures, calmness ultimately fosters resilience and can inspire others to adopt a more balanced approach. For anyone struggling in a high-pressure workplace, cultivating this grounded calmness might feel challenging at first, but it offers a powerful way to maintain authenticity and integrity amidst chaos. Over time, this approach not only preserves your well-being but can also subtly shift the workplace culture towards one that values emotional regulation and genuine engagement.
