... Read moreIn many workplaces, you might not immediately see the cracks in the system because one dedicated employee is quietly holding everything together—overfunctioning to keep operations running smoothly. This invisible work often goes unnoticed but is crucial for maintaining the illusion that the system is functioning well. However, when such an employee stops overfunctioning—stops immediately answering all queries, stops fixing problems before anyone asks, or stops remembering everything for everyone—the hidden dysfunctions and management flaws become evident. This can feel like the employee's attitude is suddenly a concern, but in reality, they are setting healthy boundaries to avoid burnout. From personal experience, I’ve seen how this invisible labor burdens the overfunctioning employee, leading to exhaustion and disengagement. Healthy managers recognize this and adjust workloads accordingly instead of questioning the employee's commitment. They understand that when an employee stops overfunctioning, it doesn't mean they have become worse workers—it means they have stopped doing the invisible work that was compensating for poor system design or ineffective management. Therefore, it is critical for organizations to create transparent communication channels, distribute responsibilities fairly, and cultivate a workplace culture that values sustainability and employee wellbeing. Recognizing and addressing the root causes of overfunctioning prevents burnout and builds stronger teams where success is systemic, not reliant on a single individual. By fostering such an environment, managers can demonstrate genuine leadership, improve employee experience, and build a resilient workplace where everyone thrives rather than just one burnout individual holding it all together.
