stimming is... ✨

A lot of people don’t even realize they stim.

Stimming isn’t always obvious.

Sometimes it looks like hair twirling, tapping, zoning out, humming, scratching, chewing the inside of your cheek, or repeating sounds.

For many ADHD and neurodivergent people, these behaviors help regulate overwhelm, focus, emotions, and sensory input.

Not everything is “attention seeking.”

Sometimes it’s nervous system regulation.

Which ones do you relate to most?

... Read moreMany people are unaware that they engage in stimming because it often manifests in small, everyday actions like clearing the throat, wiggling fingers, or tapping surfaces. From personal experience, I found that stimming is a crucial coping mechanism that brings a sense of calm during overwhelming moments. For instance, chewing the inside of the cheek or rubbing the eyes can help redirect intense sensory input or emotional distress. Stimming is not just a behavior linked to autism; it is common among people with ADHD and other neurodivergent conditions. It helps regulate the nervous system by providing predictable sensory feedback that can focus the mind and soothe anxiety. These repetitive actions—whether twirling hair, humming, or repeatedly rolling objects between the hands—serve as tools for maintaining emotional and cognitive balance. It’s important to recognize that stimming is not about seeking attention but about nervous system regulation. This perspective helps reduce stigma and promotes understanding of neurodiversity. Accepting and accommodating stimming can improve everyday well-being, whether by creating sensory-friendly environments or allowing time for such behaviors without judgment. Through my own journey, I noticed that identifying which stimming behaviors I relate to helps me manage stress and sensory overload effectively. Even activities like zoning out or making sounds can be meaningful ways to cope. For those curious about their own behaviors, observing subtle signs like squinting, spinning objects, or faint humming can shed light on unnoticed stimming habits. Overall, embracing stimming as a valid and beneficial practice fosters greater self-awareness and compassion toward oneself and others. It’s a reminder that what might seem like small, repetitive actions can have a significant impact on emotional health and sensory processing.

Hair twirling, my 6th grade teacher made me stop, it irritated the hell out of her, then I started jiggling my leg, she couldn't see that.
