I’m an 18 y/o alcoholic

I’ve had issues with substances from a younger age. I grew up in a house where alcohol was a big no because of my Dad, who had been sober for years.

I abused medication since I was 11 and when I was 13 I started drinking. It was never a problem until I was in my junior year of highschool.

After I started dating a boy a year older than me, I started drinking with him on the daily. I didn’t think it would be a big deal, but it’s slowly consumed my life. After we broke up, I used alcohol to chase down my feelings and make me feel euphoric.

I was drinking at all times of the day, no matter where I was or who I was with. I would show up to church and school hungover and continue drinking to cure it.

It took a long time, but eventually my best friend reached out to me and told me that I had a problem. She didn’t pressure me into getting sober or stop being my friend when I didn’t stop. She stuck by my side when I finally decided to take getting sober seriously.

It took a lot of time and multiple relapses but I am now 6 1/2 months sober.

For anyone struggling with alcohol or substance abuse, I urge you to reach out to local support groups or to your friends and family. Though it seems like no one will understand, everyone has their own battles and we are more alike than we seem.

Remember, you're not alone in this fight, and reaching out for help is a sign of strength.
